Joe's Funny Old Game
Monday, 8th Aug 2011"To get a point is brilliant really and it is players like that you need in your team for occasions like that."
Joe Cardle was electric on Saturday against Inverness Caley Thistle. He created several opportunities to deliver dangerous crosses into the box, executed some fine corner kicks and generally whizzed around the pitch like a wasp in a jampot. His sting was sending in the ball for Andy Kirk's second goal but his contribution throughout attracted the praises of his Manager. The 24 year old winger was just as quick with his tongue as he told his story of the game.
"It was a funny game - we only got the point even though we thought we played really well. In the first half the boys showed to everyone that we are a passing side, can get the ball down and play. We can use the wide men to get balls into the box and make chances. We gave away three goals but we have to look at the positive side. It was just our second game in the SPL; a lot of the boys have never played at this level before and we have to push on now.
"This is a great platform for me personally and all summer I have been looking forward to the league starting. I was happy with my performance and I just have to keep it going. It is all about consistency of my game now and I am looking forward to the next game.
"In the first game against St Mirren we didn't play to our standard compared to last season when we played consistently throughout the season. Against Inverness we were a lot better and the boys have been brilliant all week in training. We were unfortunate not to take all three points from the game but credit to Inverness, they have come out and did well to get the goals."
The winning goal was a really special effort from a last minute free kick and Joe forgave the goalscorer for his boot kissing celebration:-
"Martin Hardie has got us a point at the end; it was a lovely free kick - tremendous! I thought it was very far out but he hit it perfectly and it nestled right in the top corner. It is one of the best free kicks I have seen on the pitch, one hell of a free kick in the last couple of minutes of the game. To get a point is brilliant really and it is players like that you need in your team for occasions like that."
