Gallacher wins guessing game

Paul Gallacher saves penalty

Paul Gallacher and John Potter had a combined total of 73 games together last season as they ensured St Mirren remained in the SPL but in the opening match of the new season they found themselves up against their former employers. Paul was happy to get his central defender off the hook especially after the number of defensive blocks he had put in for him in 2010-11.

"I thought it was a decent game; we know ourselves that we can play better. St Mirren were tough opposition for us tonight but it gives us a platform to build on.  We have got a clean sheet and a point on the board. We are pleased with the performance."

Gall was the hero with his first half penalty save from Stephen Thomson. The St Mirren striker had previously scored against Paul from the spot for Rangers and admitted that he thought the Pars keeper might go for the other side because that's where he had placed the other one:-

"I'd like to say I worked it out by watching videos and all sorts.  The big man shouldn't think!  It's just a guessing game and there were so many things going through my head at the time. I got the luck and saved the penalty.

"At the time it is just one of those things.  You save the penalty but you have got to switch on again."

The save was all part of Paul's desire to play well against the club he has played with for the past two seasons.

"I was gutted that it was Potts who gave away the penalty.  I thought it was soft, everybody was unsure what happened there. It was great to make the save and make Potts a happy man."

Paul revealed that he and John Potter had been nervous all day up until kick off about facing his old club so soon.

"I am nervous ahead of every game but tonight was a little bit special. The save was the highlight of the night but the bigger picture is a point on the board."

The match will hopefully provide a quick surge up the learning curve that is obviously facing the Pars and Gall felt that those squad members lacking SPL experience got a jolt from the game.

"It is a massive jump up."  Managers Post Match Comments
