Phil McGuire Post Hibs
Saturday, 30th Dec 2006We have to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves and get on with it. Nobody is going to help us apart from ourselves.
Phil McGuire got out of his sickbed to take the field at Easter Road on Saturday. Having been struck down by virus both he and Greg Shields only just made the match in Edinburgh and both were totally drained at the end. Phil related his story:-
"I did a fitness test before the game so I was fine to play on. Greg Shields was the same; he wasn't well yesterday - you just have to soldier on and get on with it. That's all you can do in the situation.
"We know that Hibs are a good team, there is no denying that. We had clear cut chances, there weren't many in the game and the first goal came when the boy (Chris Killen) turned inside me and hit a good finish. It was unfortunate because up until that point we had contained them.
"We had a wee half chance just before that and they hit us with the succour punch. After that it was inevitable that after they got the penalty for hand ball at the back post and put it away. They deserved their win but for effort and determination nobody can fault us.
"It is not individual mistakes, in the last three games we could have taken more than what we have done. St Mirren away - you take the point; certainly Inverness at home we were good for three; the Motherwell game we were certainly good enough for three. Results elsewhere have gone against us.
"Today look at St Mirren and Motherwell picking up another point today. It is a bit demoralising at the time but Tuesday's game is just around the corner. We have to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves and get on with it.
"Throughout the team everybody is working hard. In Tuesday's game against Motherwell we had four or five great opportunities but not scored. It is disappointing because our play merited goals but that's football, you cannot greet about these things and have to keep plugging away. Nobody is going to help us apart from ourselves. Hopefully we will turn it around, get goals and pick up points."
Dunfermline Athletic will play their previously postponed Reserve League match against Aberdeen on Wednesday 3rd January. The match will kick off at 1.00pm at Links Park, Montrose. |
