Stephen Kenny's Cup success
Sunday, 3rd Dec 2006Derry City win FAI Carlsberg Cup in exciting 4-3 final at Lansdowne Road, Dublin.
Dunfermline Manager Stephen Kenny returned to his native Dublin this afternoon to see his former club lift their second cup of the season. A great many Pars fans watched and listened to the match live on RTE via the internet. Pictures gave up during extra time but the radio broadcast on both RTE and BBC Radio Ulster allowed those following the fortunes of Stephen Kenny's team to enjoy a dramatic win. The FAI Carlsberg Cup Final between Derry City and St Patricks Athletic was the last ever game of football played at Lansdowne Road and it was a fantastic match with Derry City winning 4-3 after extra time. A rather wet crowd of 16,022 watched St Pats go into a 20th minute lead but Derry bounced back to equalise four minutes later. A 75th minute penalty put St Pats into the lead again but Derry made it 2-2 with five minutes remaining. In extra time it looked bleak for Derry when the Saints went into a 3-2 lead in the first period of extra time but captain Peter Hutton equalised in 107 minutes and then Derry grabbed a winner with ten minutes left. The Derry City fans were delighted with the result and the very fitting send off for Stephen Kenny. Everyone at Dunfermline congratulate Derry City players and management for this tremendous achievement.
