New Contract for Aaron Comrie

Aaron Comrie commits himself to Dunfermline Athletic until the summer of 2025.

Dunfermline Athletic is delighted to announce a new two year contract for Aaron Comrie. The 26 year old defender can now look forward to adding to his 143 appearances for the Pars. He expressed his delight to agree his new deal:-

“I’m delighted to get it done. It has been a special season, I have enjoyed every minute of it and glad to be part of the Championship squad next season. It has been coming for a wee while, it has been agreed for a couple of weeks but with the holiday last week it has just taken until today to get it signed.”

Aaron, who joined Dunfermline four years ago from St Johnstone, was oblivious of other offers, claiming that he enjoyed his football at Dunfermline and that was where he wanted to continue his playing career:-

“Nothing has changed on that. I have loved it and with the gaffer coming in he has been brilliant with me. I have a good relationship with him so it is where I want to be. That is important and if I go back to the start of the season, I wasn’t sure about what I was going to be doing.

“I fell out of favour last year in the Championship but the manager made it clear right from the start that he wanted to keep me and that has continued. As soon as the gaffer said to me that he wanted to extend my deal I was happy to stay. I genuinely believe that I played some good football and I have enjoyed being part of the squad.”

Aaron played in 35 of Dunfermline’s 36 league games this season, starting in all but one of those 35. He played the full 90 minutes in all but two of those starts, sometimes at right back sometimes at centre back. He revealed that he did not
have a preference for his role.

“I think the right back and right centre back are similar roles. It plays to my strengths in the defensive sense, but I have filled in at right wing back as well so there are a couple of positions there that I can cover but there have been no discussions yet as to what formations we are going to be playing.”

Success this season has been all the more special because of the trials and tribulations of the previous season where he ended up playing a bit part in the final ten league and two play off games.

“I think it was important for the club to go up straight away but that was never a pressure that was put on us. A few of the boys had lost their confidence, there were boys out of favour and this year got themselves back in the team and they have been flying. Rhys Breen is a good example of that, he has been excellent this year and he is one of many who has turned up and done well.”

Rhys and Aaron have been stalwarts in the Pars defence in League One, conceding only 21 goals and losing one once in the campaign. Aaron accepts that level of success might not be so easy in the Championship:-

“Definitely but I think we have a good foundation that we have got. It will be a similar back three, four - that will continue to stay the same. We know each other, we know how each other plays so hopefully we can keep that good shape and keeping getting those shutouts.

“It is important building these relationships. If it is a four or a three I will always be next to Bene and he helps me out and likewise I will help him out, it has been good.”

Bonding continued last week while the players spent time together in Benidorm and not giving much away Aaron claimed that it was “pretty quiet to be fair”. Without elaborating he reported:-

“There were a few good performers, Josh Edwards was right up there as the Man of the Match on holiday. Breeny was great, he kept himself out of bother so he had a good time. It is a close knit squad anyway, a lot of the boys have been here three or four years together. It is good that the majority of the boys are staying.”

Pre season is the best part of a month away but Aaron is looking forward to the starting date:-

“16th June but that has not been officially confirmed, just wee whispers. I have another week or so to enjoy myself and then I will get back to the running and getting myself in shape again.

“I actually don’t mind that side of things. After the last game against Alloa the manager said ‘if you think last pre season was hard just wait until you see this one’. I’m not sure how that is going to turn out.”
