Hot Toddy ready for Double Diamonds

Friday, 10th Feb 2023

“I`m just really thankful to the coaching staff and the manager for putting their trust in me and letting me show what I can do out on the pitch.

Twenty one year old Matty Todd has already made more appearances for Dunfermline this season than he did in the whole of last season. With 30 starts in the 31 appearances under James McPake, Matty admitted that he is just “loving it”. He must be one of the first names down in manager’s team lines and he described his pride in representing his hometown team:-

"Just being in and around the boys all the time and playing games - it`s what I love doing. I`m just really thankful to the coaching staff and the manager for putting their trust in me and letting me show what I can do out on the pitch.

"Joe Chalmers, Chris Mochrie, Chris Hamilton, even Craig Wighton - just getting involved with those players is great. They just know how you work. We do combinations down at training every day and we`re working on things. You can just see that there are things that we do and the players are latching on to it straight away. We`re delighted with how things are going.

"This season has been good but we`ve just got to focus on the team, keep doing what we`re doing because we want to continue it for the rest of the season."

If Matty runs out at the Excelsior Stadium on Saturday to face Airdrieonians it will be his 76th appearance for the Pars. He recalled the first match against Rhys McCabe’s team back in August and how they have prepared for what is the first of a double header against the Diamonds:-

"It`s been a long time since we last played them, when they came to East End it was tough, but Saturday away will be a completely different game.

"We`ve done a lot of work on them throughout the week, but most of the focus has been on what we can do to break them down and how we can punish them in certain areas of the pitch. We`ll go there with a game plan and hopefully we can pick up another three points.

"I think we`ve shown over the course of the season that we can win games in different ways. We`ve battled, we`ve outplayed teams but we`ll focus on what we can do and how well we can play against them."

Matty appears to cover every square inch of the pitch during his usual high intensity work rate in matches and his roving role this season is in contrast to the right back position favoured under John Hughes. Matty agreed:-

"This season has probably been the furthest forward I`ve played. I`m really enjoying it, I just want to thank the manager for his trust and playing me there. I’m playing somewhere I enjoy, I like to help the striker, link play, I like to run forward and overall I like getting involved. I`m thoroughly enjoying it this season and hopefully we can continue doing what we`ve been doing so far."

With seven goals credited to him Matty is contributing to Dunfermline’s success and now claims that he wants to be celebrating plenty more goals:-

"As I`ve said many times before, it`s something that I want to add and I want to keep on adding up until the end of the season. Hopefully I can add another one on Saturday."
