Tuesday, 31st Jan 2023cinch Reserve League Cup: Taylor Sutherland (24) 1-0: no.34 1-1
Dunfermline won 5-4 on penalties
Despite Queen’s Park having a Scottish Cup tie away to Inverness Caley Thistle in the evening they fulfilled this cinch Reserve League Cup tie n Tuesday afternoon. Both sides fielded young players with Miller Fenton captaining the Dunfermline team.
There was little goalmouth action and neither keeper had anything meaningful to do for the first twenty minutes. In 22 minutes Pars Max Little had an elementary catch as Lucas McCormick headed on target from a cross from the right.
Dunfermline went ahead in 24 minutes when Taylor SUTHERLAND was able to run on to a ball down the left channel and he stroked the ball past the advancing Callan McKenna 1-0.
Unfortunately the lead lasted only three minutes with the Glasgow side hitting back through their no.34. The initial shot was blocked then the follow up close in took a deflection that gave Little virtually no chance 1-1.
McCormick broke through the Dunfermline defence to run in on goal in 29 minutes but Little made a good save to prevent a second Queens goal. Queen’s Park then enjoyed more possession and looked more threatening as the half progressed but they did nothing to test Little.
Half time: Dunfermline 1 Queen’s Park 1
Queens started the second half strongly but it was the home side who were to have a good opportunity to go ahead. In 59 minutes Sutherland switched the ball across the 18 yard line to Michael Beagley but he shot over the crossbar.
Little held an effort from no.38 and after coming on as a sub Jake Sutherland received a cross from Andrew Tod but he could get enough on his 68th minute shot to direct the ball on target.
After a Lennon Connolly break, Sam Young made a good block to prevent a net bound shot and from the corner Lewis Reid headed over the bar. At the other end Fenton’s cross was blocked for a 75th minute corner on the left but when Tod delivered McKenna fisted away.
Tod forced a save out of McKenna with a low shot to the keeper’s right and in 86 minutes Little comfortably plucked an on-target shot out of the air. The English keeper pulled off a good save to turn a 90th minute shot around his post and although the Spiders hit the post from the corner, the match would go to penalties.
