Nikolay promises more to come
Friday, 2nd Dec 2022NT:- “Team spirit has been good and everyone wants to keep it going for each other.
Dunfermline’s 26 year old striker Nikolay Todorov is happy that he has already surpassed last season’s goals tally and since it is only the start of December, he is hopeful that he can add plenty more starting in Saturday’s League One match at home to Queen of the South. Having scored against the Doonhamers in the first meeting with them, Nikolay is first and foremost after the three points that would add to the Pars table topping points total and getting on the scoresheet again would be an added pleasure. He told the website:-
“I have already beaten my record from last season and I am happy because last season wasn’t good enough. You are always trying to improve and always trying to score more goals, that is why I am in the team. I love scoring goals because that is one way to help the team. There are many more ways to do that but I have scored plenty of goals in my past.”
With an unbeaten home record and a seven point lead in the league, it is no surprise that he is delighted with his season so far:-
“It has been enjoyable so far, we have a really enjoyable team spirit between the coaches and the players. We are doing well and we just look to keep that going, everyone in the team needs to play their part.”
With ten starts, eleven appearances off the bench and seven goals Nikolay has played his part in the team’s success:-
“There is loads to do for a striker, holding up to the ball when you are under pressure like in the Falkirk game here. You don’t get that very often because most teams sit in against us. A striker needs to link the ball and when crosses and the passes are coming you need to be there to utilise them.”
Nikolay was signed by Peter Grant in the summer of 2021 but he now finds himself playing for his third Dunfermline manager. The leadership of James McPake and his assistant Dave Mackay appears to have worked out better for the Bulgarian but he claimed:-
“I have not done anything different, I have been the same just there is better understanding between each other. I hope that keeps going and I can play even more, score more and do better for each other.
“I try to score every single game. It doesn’t always happen but I’m there and I have chances. If you are not getting the chances then you need to be worried. I’m getting chances, I’m getting on the end of them and have already scored quite a few goals.
“Sometimes you go through spells where you don’t score goals, sometimes when it opens up you won’t stop scoring goals. That is how it is working. At the moment I’m not worried because I’m getting in positions and the gaffer knows what I’m capable of. I can score goals.”
Strikers need service and there has been no shortage of that from wingbacks Aaron Comrie and Josh Edwards with Joe Chalmers providing chances as well from set plays. Nikolay again praised the team work in creating opportunities:-
“They have been great but they have all been great, you can’t point fingers at any one player. Deniz and the defence have kept clean sheets, the midfield have worked really really hard and we have been scoring goals and winning games.
“Team spirit has been good and everyone wants to keep it going for each other. You always look at your mistakes and how you can improve and do better next time” and he confirmed “when the last cup game got out the way it was back to concentrating on Queen of the South.”
Nikolay’s home country have not qualified for a major tournament since 2002 and he feels Scotland were unlucky not to qualify because they have quality players making their mark in the English Premierleague and for Rangers and Celtic. So as a neutral what does he make of the World Cup?
“I have got my eye on Portugal because I really like Ronaldo. Richarlison has scored nine in nine for his country and is very very good. Brazil have a really good team but I don’t know how everyone is playing in the intensity of that heat. They have been doing really good.
“It is early, some teams that had already qualified have been keeping their squads fresh in the third game and that’s why we have seen scores going this way and that way. Everyone can beat everyone, you saw that with Saudi Arabia against Argentina. England haven’t found their real form yet but as I said I hope Portugal win it, Brazil have a really strong squad but even though Argentina slipped the first game, they are very capable.”
