Pars need a sharp Wighton
Friday, 21st Oct 2022Craig Wighton:- “I`m starting to feel a bit better now, sharper, so hopefully I can get a run of games and score a few more.”
With two goals in the last three games there are signs that Craig Wighton’s sharpness is returning. His manager praised the 25 year old’s performance against Clyde and post match he enthused that when his striker is sharp then “we have one of the best players not just in this league but the league above as well”. Craig spoke to the website after the match and said that it was good to be back on the scoresheet:-
“I`ve not scored enough goals recently, but I`m starting to feel a bit better now, sharper, so hopefully I can get a run of games and score a few more.”
He almost got another goal against Clyde with two good efforts in the second half where he felt that he probably should have done better:-
“It`s just about getting into the right areas when you`ve got wing backs like Josh and Aaron, up and down all night creating chances. We should have been a wee bit more comfortable in the end but it`s a great win.
“I thought the boys looked good and we started the game well. We maybe lost our way a wee bit at the end of the first half, but I thought second half we controlled the game. We should have scored a couple more and made it a bit more comfortable, but it was a great night all round.”
Still smiling after having watched Matty Todd find the Clyde net from 45 yards out, Craig praised Matty`s contribution for his own 15th minute goal:-
“He`s obviously played in a few different positions but, wherever he`s played, he`s been absolutely brilliant. It`s up to him now to keep doing that every week, and he`ll have a very bright future.”
Tuesday night was Craig’s first start since lining up against Kelty Hearts on 20th August. Coming back from a knee injury, 45 minutes was as long as he had played in the four appearances as a sub prior to the Clyde match. His objective now is to get match fitness back and continue hitting the net:-
“I`ve had a few niggles and obviously I was playing wide. I was in and out with my knee but we`ve got to the bottom of that. It`s just about managing that during the week and, in the last few weeks, I`ve felt a lot better. Hopefully that`s the end of that, and I can carry on the rest of the season feeling sharper.”
A sharp Craig Wighton in a side whose confidence is riding sky high could be a great boost to the Pars especially in light of the hamstring injury sustained by fellow striker Lewis McCann in the win over Clyde. Now the unbeaten run has been extended to eleven matches and Craig agreed that was no mean feat:-
“There`s not many teams that will do that, it doesn`t matter what level it`s at. It`s something we`re proud of but, come the end of the season, we don`t want to be just saying we had a good run. We want to be right up there at the end of the season.”
Dunfermline may well be unbeaten in the first eleven league games but they are well aware that they are only four points ahead of Falkirk and FC Edinburgh.
“It`s tight enough, so we need to keep doing what we`re doing, one game at a time. Everyone says it, but it`s true, especially in this league. Every game`s tough. Home games are where teams maybe come and sit in, and we have to break them down, then away from home, it`s going to be difficult going to some of these grounds.
“We`ve done well so far, but it is only a start. We need to keep building on that, and it doesn`t get any harder than Montrose away at the weekend.
“It’s not too far from me either, so I`m looking forward to that. I thought the game at East End against them was a really tough game. They`re a good side, with a lot of experience in that division, so it`ll be a tough game, a tough place to go but the way that we`re playing, we`ll go anywhere full of confidence. If we play as well as we can, then hopefully it`ll be another positive result.”
