Todd swats Wasps again
Sunday, 9th Oct 2022Hot Toddy is strength as Dunfermline see off Alloa Athletic
On the scoresheet against Alloa Athletic for the second time this season, Matty Todd wore a broad smile as he confessed that he did intend scoring at the Indodrill Stadium on Saturday. His previous goal, the match winner back on the opening day of this cinch League One season, sailed into the Alloa goal from what was launched as a crossed ball from deep down the left. Matty showed good timing and great composure to produce a fine finish to score the second goal of what turned out to be a 3-0 away win, he told the website:-
“Yes, that one I did mean! It was a great ball over the top from Breeny, we had been working on it during the week - getting me in behind and spinning inside and outside centre halves. I had a quick look and saw the keeper off his line and I just lifted it over him so I’m delighted with it.”
The 21 year old has started every one of Dunfermline Athletic’s thirteen matches this season, playing the full 90 minutes in eleven of these. The role he was given for the Pars fourth away league match demonstrated his great versatility and value to the team. He described where he was asked to play:-
“It is not playing out wide as such, I’m still in the centre of the pitch playing a higher position. During the week the manager said that he was going to play me there, I’m glad that he has trusted me in that position and I have gone and shown him that I can put in a performance in different areas of the pitch.”
Matty certainly created openings for himself and others especially in a very impressive first half display, topped off with his goal in the second minute of time added on at the end of it. He agreed:-
“I showed a lot of energy throughout the half, at times I could probably be better on the ball - one-two touches and move it, then spin in behind and get the team forward.
“As you say it probably was my best 45 minutes of the season. I need to keep that consistency up for the full 90 and then move on to next week.”
The Indodrill was Dunfermline’s training base for last two seasons and Matty believes his familiarity with the playing surface helped him notch his first ever away goal for the Pars and his first from his favoured right foot:-
“It is a tricky pitch when it is dry, the ball holds up. At the start of the game it was quite slick and then dried up during the first half. With the ball being played over the top, it bounced off him and I just chipped it over. We have trained on it over the past couple of years and that is something that I have taken to my advantage and I’m glad that it has.”
The half time instruction to Matty from the manager was just to keep doing what he was doing because he was causing the opposition loads of problems by getting in behind them. Nevertheless Alloa had more of the ball in the second half but Matty felt the third goal ended the contest:-
“I think the change of shape helped them, we didn’t really get to grips with the change of shape until fifteen to twenty minutes into the half. After that it settled down and when Craig Wighton came on he put it in the back of the net with his first touch.
“The game was kind of over after that. I’m delighted for him, he has had a tough few weeks with his knee, so it is good to see him back on the pitch and scoring again.”
