Matty does it on his Todd

Sunday, 31st Jul 2022

“I just heard the fans cheering. Thankfully it`s gone in the net.

The third Dunfermline goal for Matty Todd was a tremendous way to celebrate his 50th appearance for his home town club. His 73rd minute goal won the opening league match of the season and secured the much sought after three points for the Pars. It was termed a fluke goal by Alloa Athletic manager Brian Rice and speaking after the match Matty openly admitted that the effort that found the net was meant to be a cross.

So disappointed as he with his attempt to pick out second half substitute Nikolay Todorov that he had actually turned away in disgust with the cross:-

“I just heard the fans cheering. Thankfully it`s gone in the net. It`s one of those games which we probably weren`t ruthless enough in front of goal, but three points to start off the league season, it`s big. We`re delighted with it.

“Last week we were quite dominant and had a fair amount of chances today, we had to be patient and build the play up. We didn`t create as many chances as we did last week but the three points to start off the league season is huge. We`re absolutely delighted.”

The 21 year old celebrated by running swiftly towards the fans in the North West Stand who like him, had shown great patience as James McPake’s team fought to make the breakthrough:-

"Something the manager has said when he first came in is he wants to play quick. He wants to get the ball back in play, he wants us to be on the front foot. But at times it will be tough and we have to be patient. When teams come here to East End they`ll try and frustrate us most of the time. At the end of the day it is about being patient but leaving with the three points is what we`re after."

The change of shape after the interval seemed to suit the young midfielder who forced a save out of the Wasps keeper Jay Hogarth just 40 seconds into the second half.

"It is something the manager has also asked from his two No 8s is that he wants runners forward. Alloa came here and defended deep and we probably struggled to break them open in the first half. The second half we changed the shape - fair play to the manager, it worked and we looked a lot more of a threat in the second half with crosses in the box and chances on goal. It`s huge.”

The win makes Dunfermline one of four in League One to take full points on day one. Next up is an away game against FC Edinburgh who took three points from an away fixture against Kelty Hearts. Matty predicted that all the teams in the league will be formidable opponents but revealed that they have been working on ways of getting the better of them:-

"It`s something we`ve been working on in pre season - breaking down teams. It`s tough but we`ll have to play quick and move the ball sharp and break teams open. That`s what we`re hoping to do throughout the season."
