Thursday, 21st Jul 2022The Heritage Trust bring important medal to East End Park
Dunfermline Athletic are pleased to note that the Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust have acquired the War Medal belonging to James (Jimmy) Morton of Dunfermline Athletic. Jimmy joined the famous Scottish sporting battalion, the 16th Royal Scots, better known as McCrae`s Battalion when it was raised in 1914.
He was a committee member of Dunfermline Athletic which translates in today`s terms to a member of the Board, as the club was not incorporated into a limited company until after the war. Jimmy crossed to France in January 1916 with the battalion, and was killed alongside many Dunfermline men on 1 July 1916 which was the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Also killed on that day with McCrae`s Battalion was Davie Izatt, our left half.
Jimmy Morton and his family lived in Appin Crescent, Dunfermline which is just a few yards from East End Park. He worked in one of Dunfermline`s linen mills.
The medal, a photograph of Jimmy Morton, and the scroll that the family received from King George V, will be on display in the Heritage Trust cabinets in the foyer next to the Club shop from next week.
The Club pays tribute to those of all nations who have lost their lives in military conflicts and sadly continue to do so.
