Pressure is on Ayr too

Wednesday, 27th Apr 2022

Rhys Breen:- “It adds a bit of pressure on to Ayr as well, they have something to play for so all we can do is focus on ourselves and this game on Friday is vital for us to win.

Dunfermline centre back Rhys Breen was drafted into the first team against Partick Thistle after Coll Donaldson did not recover from a groin strain. The 22 year old who was signed from Rangers in July last year, is hoping the team can get back to playing football the way the manager wants to see them play when Queen of the South come to East End Park on Friday night. He told the website:-

“It wasn’t the result we wanted against Partick but we had to change our style of play because of the pitch. The pitch wasn’t going to help us out with the way we want to play football. In the last game of the season we just need to go out and give it everything that we can.”

The player who played six matches while on loan to Partick in 2020 described the Firhill pitch as really bobbly and not one to take any chances on:-

“Against Queen of the South on Friday I feel like we will be able to play a bit more football and that will suit us a lot better.”

It could be construed that Dunfermline are in need of a favour from Partick this week as they take on Ayr United while already considering themselves in the play offs. Rhys chose to see it differently:-

“It adds a bit of pressure on to Ayr as well, they have something to play for so all we can do is focus on ourselves and this game on Friday is vital for us to win.

“Both us and Ayr are in the same position and it has gone right down to the last game. We want to make sure that we are secure for next season and make a much more positive start compared to the season that we have had this year.

“When we play football it is the best that we will be, the way that we pass the ball we are probably arguably the best in the league. It is just the results, the final product and the wee bits that you usually don’t think will matter a lot in the game.

“Defensively if you switch off for a second in the game you will end up conceding a goal. Hopefully this weekend we will leave it all out on the pitch and get the result that we need.”

Rhys also spent six months of the 2020-2021 season on loan to Queen of the South so he knows a good few people including the current manager at the club who will be the opponents on Friday night. He reckons that the Palmerston Parkers will want to finish their Championship fixtures on a high:-

“I know a lot of the boys, I know Willie Gibson and I don’t think it is going to be a walk in the park. Willie is really good professional, he is really really demanding of himself and the players around him.

“I don’t think they will shut down, I don’t think they will feel sorry for themselves. They have also got a lot to play for next season so I don’t think us playing against them is going to be easy. I think that it will be the total opposite of that, so we need to prepare right and we will definitely go out there and give it 110 per cent.”

Rhys Breen has still to find himself on the scoresheet with his first ever senior goal but he would be delighted if he could break his duck in such an important match for Dunfermline:-

“If I am lucky enough to get on the pitch again I will try and take my opportunity. Any time that I’m on that pitch I am just making sure that I do the defensive basics right and if I was to get a goal or would be an added bonus.”
