Dunfermline Athletic manager John Hughes felt that his side “battered” Morton from start to finish.
“We had total domination of the football, I’d hate to see the stats, we absolutely battered them with football moving them from side to side. That was very good, our passing was very good. In the first half we were a little shot shy, cross shy. We needed to be better than that and we tried to put that right in the second half.
“We had to calm them down a little to put that right in the second half. They felt a little bit aggrieved because they had put so much into it and dominated the first half but had nothing to show for it.
“We had to be patient, stick to the performance, don’t be chasing it and it will come. I am really proud of the way they went about their business and we deserved to win it. A lot more crosses, a lot more goalmouth action in the second half. We got the goal, we hit the post and the offside one when you se it is touch and go.
“When you see it because on the near side on the side of the linesman, a player was actually playing him on so it is just a bit of luck. Even the one that hit the post came back and we couldn’t get it over the line. If it did we thoroughly deserved it for the way we went about our business.
“You wouldn’t think that we were the team at the bottom of the league. We were very very good tonight.”
To go on to the 88th minute to find the equalising goal demonstrates the character in the team?
“Especially in the place that we are. It is easy to sa6 it is what it is but that is not the case. The character and the spirit, the fort that they put in was absolutely fantastic. They deserved to win.
“You know I have football guys here (watching) and a few of them were in my office. A lot of them have seen the tactics and seen what we are trying to do. The boys went out and implemented them
“I’m honest enough to say first half we needed to be batter around their goal. Second half we peppered it a lot more and just came unstuck at the end by not getting that winner.”
Do you believe if you play like that the wins will come?
“Well it has to be like that but there is no easy game in this league. We need to keep believing in what we are doing, keep trusting in each other, keep believing in each other. There has been a massive, massive improvement in terms of the way we are going about our business.
“We try to do it right, we are trying to play football right and a lot of the boys are buying into that and I feel that they need a break in terms of maybe even a scrappy goal, a couple of scrappy goals or even a mistake. It doesn’t seem to be going for us right at this moment in time.
“What do you do? You use that as your fuel and go again. I am really proud of the boys and the Dunfermline fans know the effort and commitment that they put into that match tonight and some of the good football.”
“Lewis McCann found the net, maybe sitting him on the bench because we played him one or two games to early but to come on and get his goal with his physical presence. I am absolutely delighted for him.
“I will go home tonight and sit and watch it. You will go through your post match, analyse it and you will just be left trying to work out what shots had they apart from the goal?”
