From drumming up fame to playing the game

Miller Fenton has been a Dunfermline Athletic supporter for as many of his eighteen years as he can remember. Having been at one time the one responsible for beating the drum in the North West Stand he has taken another step along the pathway towards first team football for the club. Making the move from terracing to team would be an odd feeling for most, and Miller explained:-

“It was quite mental when I first came in playing with the players that you would watch on a Saturday and training with them everyday. I would love to be part of a Dunfermline team playing in the top flight, it would be brilliant.”

This week Miller signed his second contract at Dunfermline after initially inking a contract for Stevie Crawford in 2019 only days after his sixteen birthday. No surprise really then that Miller was delighted to have impressed John Hughes sufficiently to earn his new deal:-

“I am really happy with the progress that I have made under the manager. He has helped me a lot since he came in, it has been good and I really like working under him.

“I am enjoying the training but obviously you want to be playing games but training with him every day he is telling me all the time what I can do better.”

Miller as the real kid in the squad remains really close to fellow youngsters Matty Todd, Lewis McCann and Paul Allan. He may be a couple of years of age behind them but he can look up to them, they have all been in his position as well. “I am just trying to follow in their footsteps. There is a pathway there you just have to work hard to get there.”

Miller can play left back or left centre back and after East Fife gave him the taste of first team football from March to May last year, he is keen to get out on loan again since it can bring with it the opportunities to play first team football.

“I think a loan deal is what I need to be honest because Josh Edwards is playing well (in my position) here just now and it is hard for me to get a game so going out on loan would develop me very much. At East Fife last season. I got a few games so it was a good bit of experience.

“If I can go out on loan until the end of the season to go and get a run of games and come back next season a better player. My aim is to be playing for Dunfermline week in week out.”

Miller is very level headed and focused on making a career in the game maybe because he doesn’t need to go far for advice:-

“My father played as a young boy at Rangers and went down to Oldham but stopped playing after that. He knows what it takes to make it and he is just trying to guide me on the right path. He was a few years older than Greg Shields but they know each other quite well.

“I came through Fife Elite from under fourteens and then kept working up. I was always playing a few years above myself and then when I was playing with the 18s Stevie Crawford was the manager and he brought me in to train here. That is how it all started.”

Crediting his coaches at Fife Elite - Conor Little, Darren Dods and Gary Montignani - for his development, Miller currently finds himself soaking up the qualities of the ever present Josh Edwards. He agreed that it was frustrating being down the pecking order:-

“Yes it is hard but Josh is playing well and deserves to be playing every week. Josh is young as well but he is still a good player to look up to. He is playing week in week out so I just need to watch what he does every week.”
