Goal of the Month .. so far

Dunfermline’s 26 year old defender Coll Donaldson was pleased to get off the mark scoring the Pars 10th minute opener at Ayr on Saturday and speaking after the match he admitted he was disappointed that it wasn’t the winner.
Coll who was signed from Ross County on 3rd January on loan until the end of the season had not found the net since a Premiership match for County against Dundee United in August 2020.
“My last goal was a decent one but I’m never going to score ones that will win goal of the month. I thought that I had been fouled in a pulling match with their centre half but as I looked up I just saw the ball and just went to get something on it and it has bounced, deflected whatever to go in the top of the net. I am delighted to get my first goal for the club.”
Both goals came in the first half in which the Fifers were playing into the wind. The cold and wet conditions along with a fresh Ayrshire wind contributed to conceding a goal just seven minutes after Coll’s opener. Coll continued:-
“It was one of those games that after it you are quite happy that it was over. It wasn’t a very nice day, especially first half I felt we were under pressure for parts when we could only kick the ball thirty yards in front of you at most.”
Lewis Martin was unlucky to be caught out by a ball that he attempted to head. The Ayr United keeper Aidan McAdams launched the ball forward and Lewis’ touch sent the wind assisted ball over Jakub Stolarczyk and into the Dunfermline net generating a roar from the home support. Coll had sympathy for his central defensive partner especially since he had found his own net on his debut against Morton:-
“It was a freak one, I scored one at Cappielow as well. We will take the point but a wee bit disappointed in the end not to get all three. Both teams had chances but probably on reflection the draw was a fair result.”
Ayr United manager Lee Bullen felt that his side had to work really hard for a draw and Coll agreed that went for Dunfermline as well:-
“I thought that we stood up to the challenge of Ayr well and caused them problems when we could. We couldn’t really break into the passing game which we had worked on all week. It might have worked today but the conditions dictated the way that we ended up playing.”
Ironically due to Morton leaving the Caledonian Stadium with three points both Ayr and Dunfermline experienced a slip of one place. Dunfermline are down to eighth while Ayr with a marginally poorer goal difference now occupy ninth. The ability of ninth place Ton to beat one of the contenders for promotion on their home pitch did not surprise Coll who has considerable Championship experience with Livingston, Dundee United and Inverness Caley Thistle:-
“That is that league. I have been in it before, it is probably even more jumbled up than when I was in it. Bottom of the league can beat top of the league so you just need to try and be as consistent as possible. That is four games now without defeat, two wins and two draws. If you keep that sort of form up in this league you will end up in a better position than we found ourselves in a few weeks ago.”
Next Saturday Dunfermline return to Ayrshire to play Kilmarnock after the match just before Christmas was abandoned due to fog at Rugby Park. Coll is hoping for a good weather forecast and performance that will earn his side three league points:-
“I don’t think you will get any worse days than this for a game of football. The park held up decent so credit to the groundsman here. We will have the synthetic surface at Kilmarnock next week so it should be easier to pass the ball around on that.”
