Efe Ambrose arrives on loan

Friday, 4th Feb 2022

John Hughes delighted to finally get his man in on loan until the end of the season.

Efe Ambrose is a centre back with experience of 366 senior matches. These include 169 appearances for Celtic where he played 37 times in the Champions League and the Europa Cup.

In addition the 33 year old has 47 full caps for Nigeria and has also represented his country at U20, U23 and Olympic level. He was a member of the team that won the African Cup of Nations in 2013, playing the full 90 minutes in the final.

Manager John Hughes has had Efe in his sights for a number of weeks and he was delighted to bring him to Dunfermline this afternoon:-

“We got him, I’m absolutely delighted and it’s down to the non stop persistence of the chairman once again. I don’t know what we are going to do when the chairman steps down because it is all down the chairman, and Efe and St Johnstone to be fair.”

The Pars boss added his thanks to his St Johnstone counterpart and revealed that Efe has shown a real desire to come and play football at Dunfermline:-

“That is all he wants to do. That experience and that CV, the quality of the human being is going to be massive for Dunfermline. I think he will turn into a fans’ favourite.”

With Coll Donaldson at the age of 26 being the senior figure in last weekend’s back four, the manager feels that the experience of his latest signing is important and it also adds more competition for places:-

“The boys are doing really well, we are coming off the back of a clean sheet and hopefully that’s the same tomorrow. We have a decision to make whether Efe goes in and plays or not.

“He is in here doing his medical. He is a very fit boy and we have done a lot of due diligence in terms of the kind of character that we are bringing to the football club. He is right up there. All the players that I have signed I ask that kind of question. The response from the people that I ask who are in the dressing room at St Johnstone with him say that you will not get a better professional.”

Ambrose started his professional career in 2006 at Kaduna United his hometown club in Nigeria, before moving to play for FC Ashdod in the Israeli Premier League club in June 2010.

After two years there he attracted the interest of Celtic. Ambrose joined Scottish Premier League club on the summer 2012 transfer deadline day, signing a three-year contract.

After proposed moves to Standard Liège, and to Blackburn Rovers fell through, on 28 February 2017, Ambrose joined Hibernian on loan for the rest of the 2016-2017 season. When his contract with Celtic ended at the end of the season, Ambrose signed a two-year contract with Hibernian.

Next stop In February 2019, Ambrose went to EFL Championship club Derby County where he signed a short-term contract with the club. Subsequent moves took him to Livingston and then St Johnstone. Efe has made eight appearances for the Perth side this season, the last on 30th October 2021.

If all goes well then Ambrose could go into the Pars squad for their weekend clash with Ayr United.
