Wighton confident wins will come
Sunday, 24th Oct 2021“It is a matter of time before we start turning these performances into wins.
Pars striker Craig Wighton scored three goals in the Premier Sports Cup but he is still to get off the mark in the league. Speaking after the 0-0 draw at Firhill on Saturday Craig admitted that he had chances to win the match for Dunfermline:-
“We had chances to win. First half there was not much in it, we defended well and worked hard but in the second half we had a few chances and on another day we could probably have taken them. Overall it was probably a good point on the road but we definitely could have won in the end.”
Craig’s best chance came midway through the second half, he described it:-
“I just nicked it off the centre half, it wasn’t the greatest angle. I tried to go across the keeper but he was out quite quickly to be fair. So I was disappointed not to score but hopefully we keep getting chances like that every week.”
The Pars can justifiably feel that they have deserved more out of recent games given their performances but Craig feels that the performances have also been a lot better:-
“It is a matter of time before we start turning these performances into wins. We just need to keep doing we are doing. The last three or four games have been a lot better. We have been in the game and deserved to win a few of them. We just need to keep going and hopefully the wins will come.”
The team has been battling for that first league win and fighting for their manager, Craig agreed:-
“You can see that in the performances. Last week we were unfortunate to go 2-1 down right after we equalised. It was an unfortunate goal but we dug into to the end with everyone fighting for each other - whether that was the boys coming off the bench, everyone is in it together.
“We are all working hard and doing what the manager wants us to do so hopefully we can start getting a few wins on the board.”
Tuesday’s fixture at home against Raith Rovers is the next opportunity to win. While 18 years of age Craig made 21 appearances for the Rovers when on loan there from Dundee in the first half of season 2015-2016, he views the derby match against one of his former teams as an ideal platform for a winning start:-
“It would be perfect. Raith have obviously made a good start to the season, we know that it will be another tough game but we were unlucky through there. I thought that we were the better team in the second half we were the better again but hopefully over a 90 minute period we can produce a good performance and get our first win.”
