Edwards’ totally deflated by Ayr

Sunday, 12th Sep 2021

“To concede the goals that we did, was just sickening.”

Following the defeat away to Ayr United on Saturday, Josh Edwards found it hard to describe his feelings. The 21 year old was clearly dejected and gutted by the loss:-

“There is no worse feeling, there is nothing nice to say about it. I just feel terrible at the minute, it is just the worst feeling in the world. You just want to win and when things don’t go your way and you don’t win, it is just frustrating.”

The Dunfermline players all hoped that the league match at Somerset Park would provide the first win of their Championship season but an Ayr United side in their first match under the stewardship of Jim Duffy had other thoughts. Josh felt that the defeat came for the simple reason that the team conceded poor goals and, even though he was visibly one trying extremely hard to create goal scoring opportunities, he was critical of his own contribution:-

“The quality wasn’t good enough when I got into areas. I think I maybe put in two good crosses all day. I was pushing forward and trying hard but all the boys were trying hard it is not like we were walking about the pitch and not trying.”

The result was the Pars fourth successive defeat and Josh continued “things are just not coming off for us at the minute and it is so frustrating.

“It is a hard one to take especially after spells in the first half when we actually dominated the game. We had several chances but if you don’t take them this is the sort of thing that happens in football. We lost sloppy goals and we lost the game. Even though we were on top for easily 45 minutes of the game.

“We popped the ball about decently in the first half, had some good chances but to concede the goals that we did, was just sickening.”

The Kilmarnock born wing back has experienced lows at Dunfermline during his 62 appearances since joining from Airdrieonians in July 2019 but is optimistic that things will change and soon:-

“I have been on losing streaks before, it is never nice but nothing lasts in football so we will turn it around. I’m sure next week we will come out of the gates flying, I’m sure we will get a result because it is about time.”

Josh disagreed that it would be a matter of going back to the square one:-

“I don’t think it is all the way back to the drawing board because in the first 45 minutes we cut them open, had chances but we lost concentration at the back and it cost us today. We couldn’t break them down in the second half, they were well organised and it is hard to break down a team like that on a narrow pitch like Somerset Park.

“That is what we need to do. People know that we are a good team and they are going to sit in against us. Credit to Ayr, they defended well and defended what they had. When it comes down to it we gave them the lead to defend, it is a tough one to take.”
