Todorov’s Draw Disappointment

Dunfermline striker Nikolay Todorov was pleased to score in his first Championship match for the Pars last Saturday but described the 2-2 draw as feeling like a defeat:-
“There were certain expectations from us and we did not match them. We created chances, we scored and the manager and everyone expects when you score two away goals, to win the game.
“We will look at where we made the mistakes and improve because it is not good enough to start the league like this. There are loads of positives as well, let’s not be too negative about it. We expected to win but obviously we didn’t, so we will dust down ourselves and work hard to improve.”
Nikolay’s goal just five minutes into the second half got his side right back into the match and it looked like Kevin O’Hara might have secured the three points with a 74th minute strike. That was until Morton’s Lewis McGrattan scored in his league debut with a deflected cross. Nikolay expressed the frustration that returned to the changing room with his team mates:-
“It looked like a deflection. Nobody expected it, it was a cross but the guy is saying that it was a shot. I don’t know, it was a massive deflection which damaged us. We will regroup tomorrow, work harder to try and pick up more points next week.
“I’m not saying that we played bad but at the end of the day it is about points. That is why maybe it hurt more than it should have because we had worked hard to get on top. To lose a goal like this, I know maybe it wasn’t a great goal but it is still in the back of our net.
“We manage to get on top in the second half, we were scoring goals, enjoying being on top but we need to look and see how we can improve, help the midfielders and then midfielders to help the defenders. We will look at improving that and hopefully we can be even better than we were on Saturday.”
The Bulgarian striker was personally pleased to open his league account with the Pars first goal at Cappielow acknowledging that goals are what is expected of him:-
“First game, first goal. I am really happy, it is what I’m here for and I hope there are many more to come. It is not just for me to do well but the team as well. If I am helping that way for me, it is most important that the team is doing well.”
With Nikolay playing upfront with Craig Wighton and Kevin O’Hara, he feels that the strike force has already developed a good understanding:-
“We get on well off the pitch and on the pitch and around the training ground those two have been brilliant. I am really enjoying playing alongside them.”
Todorov scored twice against Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup just three weeks ago and he hopes to have success again when Ian McCall’s men come to East End Park on league business on Saturday:-
“We will work hard this week, look where we can improve and focus on where we can hurt the other team. We have already beaten them once in the cup, they are beatable but it is going to be definitely a hard game. They are coming to our ground so it is going to be hard for them and I know that they know it.”
