Owain Fans Williams

Thursday, 15th Jul 2021

OFW: “Last season was dire with no fans because I know what it is like at East End when our fans are there.

Dunfermline’s Owain Fôn Williams is shouting about fans returning to East End Park this Saturday for the Premier Sports Cup match against Dumbarton. The 33 year old keeper is ecstatic:-

“Fans are back! Last season was dire with no fans because I know what it is like at East End when our fans are there. I know how much this football club means to our fans, I have experienced that first hand with everything that happened when we went into lockdown.

“It is going to be fantastic to see them back through the turnstiles. They are going to be the twelfth man for us, there is no doubt that they are going to push us on. I am absolutely looking forward to seeing these seats being filled again. Get them in!”

Saturday will also be the first home match of the Peter Grant era and Owain by his own admission is like a sponge when it comes to listening to his new gaffer. He believes that the wealth of knowledge that Peter Grant clearly has can only make Owain a better goalkeeper.

The big Welshman was back between the sticks for Dunfermline in the the Premier Sports Cup tie against St Mirren on Tuesday night. Although leaving with a 1-0 defeat Owain felt that it was a very important step in the preparation for the Championship challenge ahead this season.

It was his first competitive match since the play off defeat in May and he was disappointed with the manner of Curtis Main’s goal:-

“But apart from that we shifted the ball really well and tried to find areas to play and make the pitch as big as possible and obviously try and find the pockets to try and link play up.

“Saints are a decent team with quality and they were a good test for us. Look at the goal, the ball was played in, a great ball and a good finish.”

New signing Deniz Mehmet has brought competition in the goalkeeping position and Owain welcomes that:-

“It doesn’t matter what season it is, what personalities it is, this is football. Whether it is Cammy Gill, Ben Swinton or big Deniz it is the same. I am trying to think, this is probably my nineteenth pre season, so that speaks for itself.

“You know how football ticks, how your body ticks and your mind ticks so it is what it is. Because I have played the amount of games that I have I know how to get myself going.

“What a great addition Den is, a good goalkeeper, a great guy as are the other lads who have come into the squad. I am looking forward to the season. Nice to see new faces, different challenges. It is time for us to embrace the challenge ahead whether it be in the team, whether it is a different formation and different style of play it is time for us all to embrace it.”
