Vytas ambitious for club and country
Sunday, 27th Jun 2021“I just came back on Tuesday and met the new manager then. We had a discussion and I’m looking forward to working for the new coach.”
With six members of the first team squad unavailable on Saturday for the pre season friendly against Civil Service Strollers, Peter Grant was pleased to welcome back Vytas Gašpuitis from international duty with the Lithuanian national team.
Vytas took part in the Baltic Cup, a competition that was first held in 1928 but suspended during Soviet occupation before re-appearing in 1991. He explained to this website:-
“It is played between Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. This cup is played for every year and we lost 1-0 to Estonia. Then we played in Latvia and lost again 3-1, it was not a cup for us.”
From there Vytas travelled to Spain for a friendly match that was intended as Spain`s final warm-up match ahead of Euro 2020. The match in Leganes` Butarque stadium went ahead as a full international despite positive Covid tests meaning that 16 players from Spain`s under-21 squad were brought in to make their debuts, coached by their manager Luis de la Fuente. Vytas continued:-
“We then played a friendly game in Spain against their under 21 team because the national team had problems with covid. The young guys of Spain showed us how to play football and we lost 4-0.”
Good experience however and good preparations for the 27 year old central defender who hopes to be part of his national team when they play World Cup qualifiers in September against Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Italy. He added:-
“I need to prepare for the coming season, play well and I would hope to get called up for the next international camp.”
With Euan Murray leaving Vytas is hoping to fill the void in the centre of the Pars defence:-
“I have to work hard and improve for the manager. I hope that I can play and I will try everything to hope to achieve that. I need to push myself a little bit more and keep progressing.”
Although Vytas played against seven of the Scottish Championship clubs last season he was an unused sub at Alloa in the last game of the season and did not have a chance to make an impression on the new Dunfermline manager.
“I just came back on Tuesday and met the new manager then. We had a discussion and I’m looking forward to working for the new coach.”
