Dunfermline Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Goalkeeper, Deniz Mehmet from Dundee United, who joins on a 2 year contract.
We would like to thank both Dundee United and Deniz’s representative for their help in allowing the switch to East End Park to happen.
Born in London, Deniz played for youth teams at Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, and Manchester United, before he joined the youth academy at West Ham United in 2008.
Deniz made 23 appearances for Turkey`s youth international sides, playing from U16 level up to U19 before he moved to Turkey to sign for Kayserispor, where he made his professional debut. He remained there for four seasons until January 2016, when he signed for Falkirk.
In March 2017, he arrived at Port Vale on a short term contract until the end of the 2016-17 season, becoming the first choice keeper for the English League One side. In July 2017 Deniz joined Dundee United on a one year deal.
Deniz was played mainly in Irn Bru Cup matches and had to wait until the turn of the year to get his chance as the regular first team keeper and he finished 2017-18 as United`s number one - until a freak injury sustained during the Premiership Playoff quarter final against Dunfermline when a goal celebration put an end to his season.
On May 21, 2018, Deniz signed a contract extension until the end of January 2019 but in March 2019 he had a spell at Queen of the South before returning to Dundee United four months later to compete with Benji Siegrist for the goalkeeper`s jersey in the 2019/20 season.
Mehmet made four league and eight cup appearances during the 2020-2021 season including playing in the Scottish Cup semi final defeat to Hibernian.
Pars boss Peter Grant told the media last week:-
“We know we’re light in positions — the goalkeeping area is an issue for us and that’s something we’re looking at very closely. I want two goalkeepers who are going to be fighting tooth-and-nail to get in the first-team. I want quality in there.”
