Davie Young

Monday, 7th Jun 2021

Dunfermline Athletic are sad to record the death of Davie Young, just short of his 91st birthday.

Davie was a Pars fan since childhood, and in his later years as a wheelchair user he was a regular on the viewing platform at East End Park – he appreciated the company of the Match Buddies and was always cheery, no matter the result on the pitch! His nephew Wullie Oliphant is part of the DAFC Schools Engagement Team.

Davie was born in Alloa in 1930 and on leaving school at 15 he went straight to Valleyfield Pit. From there he worked at Longannet Ammunition Depot. When he married May Oliphant they settled in Stobie Place Oakley and had their son Douglas. He then spent many years at the Rexco Smokeless Fuel depot beside Comrie Pit. Finally he worked at the poultry farm outside Crossford. Upon retiral he ran the Oakley Miners` Club Sequence Dancing group and spent many happy hours on the dance floor. He was also the gardener for the club. Davie was a skilled mouth organ player and always had one in his pocket in case he was asked to perform at the drop of a hat.

In addition he was a turnstile operator at EEP for a period. He had supported the Pars for over 80 years and as well as the two cup wins he was so proud to have attended the Pars famous win at West Bromwich in 1969.

Davie’s son Douglas has asked that donations in his dad’s memory should go to Dunfermline Athletic Disabled Supporters` Club (DADSC), and a website has been set up for anyone who wants to contribute. This is a very kind action by Davie’s family, and he would have thoroughly approved of it.
