Perfect Weekend for Debut Striker

Craig Wighton opens his Dunfermline account at the double

Having arrived on loan from Hearts for the remainder of the season Craig Wighton had a dream debut scoring early in each half of Saturday’s Championship match against Alloa. Unsurprisingly he was not satisfied with that even though it earned the three points for his new club. After the match, he told the media:-

"It should have been a hat-trick, I am annoyed about that. It is a good three points and other results have gone our as well.”

Five points adrift at the foot of the Division it was no surprise when Alloa Athletic threw everything at trying to claw their way back for at least a point. They lamented when a strong claim for a late penalty was dismissed and the 22 year old striker admitted that it was important to hang on to see the game out against a side he considered much better than their league position suggested:-

“Obviously we were hanging on a bit at times but I thought we fought it out well at the end. Alloa are probably the best footballing team that you will come up against in this league. They are just struggling to score goals, that is what is maybe what is killing them in terms of their league position.”

Craig Wighton was not involved in Hearts two matches against Alloa this season but, from the sidelines he had formed a good impression of the Wasps:-

"They are a really good side who are hard to deal with at times. They move about all over the place, they had a lot of crosses at the end but we dug in well and the boys at the back defended really well."

Now a Dunfermline player, the Dundonian also claims that joining his new club has been a great experience:-

"It probably couldn`t have gone much better, I am delighted and to get the three points and for other results to go our way, it is probably the perfect weekend."

The 90 minutes against Alloa were only his third full match of this Championship season and after not playing for seven weeks he enjoyed every minute:-

"It was good to play upfront, good to play ninety minutes, get a couple of goals, three points. I am delighted and I look forward to getting back into training for a tough game next week as well."

The on loan Hibee, Fraser Murray, supplied the on loan Jambo for both his goals truly inflicting capital punishment on the visitors. Craig feels that these will not be the last goals that he sets him up with this season:-

“He is a good player and has good delivery. When he gets it wide and if you make that run, nine times out of ten he is going to find you. I look forward to playing with him a lot more."

One of other players that Craig should have a good understanding with is Declan McManus and he feels that is already starting to happen:-

"Even in the few days training that we have had together I think we understand each other`s game and complement each other well. Especially in the first half hour we were good.

"The wide men were really getting at the full backs. We dominated and I think, when we got the goal we took our foot off the gas a bit. Then when we got the second goal we defended well."

Peter Grant’s Alloa tried their hardest to spoil the Pars day but in the end it turned out to be an important three points. Queen of the South defeated Dundee at Dens Park and up the road Arbroath maintained their unbeaten record to claim victory over Raith Rovers. Craig agreed that the 2-1 win, no matter how ugly it might have been, were hard earned:-

"Alloa are a good side and not every game is going to be pretty winning two and three nil. It is a tough league, you have to fight for every result. That is a pleasing thing as well, we showed both sides of that - in the first half hour the football that we played was really good but in the last half hour we defended well, we were organised and everyone was working for each another."
