New Year, New Contract

Aaron Comrie discusses the two year extension to his contract at Dunfermline.

Aaron Comrie has celebrated the new year with a new contract. He claimed that Dunfermline was the only club he wanted to play for and was unaware of any interest from other clubs. Minutes after putting pen to paper extending his term at Dunfermline by another two seasons, he said:-

“I’m delighted, over the moon. I’ve loved my time here so far and to get a bit of security in these current times is brilliant for me. I’m looking forward to the next two years.

“I only had six months left and I had discussions with the manager. I’ve always made it clear that I’d like to extend my stay at Dunfermline. He spoke about me in a positive way and spoke about the club in a positive way, so it was a no-brainer.”

Despite feeling “starved” of game time at St Johnstone Aaron hit the ground running at East End Park becoming almost ever-present last season and starting all but one of the 35 matches last season. An ankle injury this season has meant that he has missed out on a few matches this season however:-

“It’s been frustrating this season with my ankle. It’s been a little bit stop-start. But last season was great for me, playing games. I’m at a stage just now where I’m playing a wee bit of catch-up in terms of my game time. I’ve been starved of minutes in the past couple of years so it’s just about trying to play as many games as possible, and I feel like I can do that here at Dunfermline and improve along the way.”

Admitting that there is already a bit of uncertainty when you move clubs, Aaron has had a good feeling since the day he walked into the club and he has been particularly pleased with the partnership he has formed with Ryan Dow on the right flank:-

“It’s gone well, personally. Last season, as a squad, we maybe under achieved a little, but so far this season we’ve got a good group of boys and I’m thoroughly enjoying being part of a squad that’s doing alright.

“I’ve loved playing with Ryan, he makes my job so much easier. He’s a good player and maybe, at times, a wee bit under appreciated. We’ve built up a good partnership and hopefully we can continue flourishing down the right side.”

Earlier this week there was newspaper speculation that Premiership clubs might be interested in his service but Aaron is keen that his route to the higher league will be with Dunfermline:-

“I had a conversation with the manager and I made it pretty clear that I’ve always wanted to stay at Dunfermline and, I think, that was that. I think everybody at the club wants promotion, that is the aim. Dunfermline has been in the Championship for a long time but if we can stay together as a group and hold on to good players, and keep progressing the club, I think we’ve got a good chance.”

The match on Saturday is the Scottish Cup second round tie away to Greenock Morton and he feels after coming through 90 minutes at Inverness last week that he is fit and ready for the challenge that awaits on the Tail of the Bank:-

“I’ve been training and my ankle’s feeling good, so if all goes well this week I’ll be fine. It’s a tough week coming up. Morton is a very tough place to go, especially this early in the cup.

“It would have been nice to get a home draw but so be it. We’ve been at Morton plenty of times, we know the challenges it’s going to bring. Especially having them twice in a week, with Hearts in the middle, it’s going to be a tough old week.

“But it’s one the boys are looking forward to, there’s nothing better than playing games and, with what’s going on at the minute, in terms of lockdown, hopefully it will be a good week for the fans watching. Hopefully we can put a smile on their faces with a couple of wins and hopefully another cup run.”
