Keeper leads the attack against his old club

Owain Fôn Williams made 84 appearances for Inverness Caley Thistle between July 2015 and October 2017 and Tuesday night’s Championship match will be his first match in the Caledonian Stadium since leaving to play in the US Soccer League for Indy Eleven. He is looking forward to going back:-

“It will be very nice, I’ve got some great friends up there. But it doesn’t really matter whether I played for them or not, really, when it comes to this game. There’s three points at stake and it’s another game for us to stay up there and be competing for the title. It’ll be a very, very tough game, a hell of a tough game up there.”

The 33 year old from Penygroes in Gwynedd who was capped for Wales in November 2015 whilst an Inverness player, continued:-

“They’re a good team, we know that, we faced them in the first league game of the season. They’ll have a few players back since then, so it’ll be a very competitive, very attacking team they do have. It’s one we have to approach right, which we will do, and one we look forward to.”

The Fifers will travel up the A9 on a high after their added time winner against Arbroath on Boxing Day. Owain was delighted with the finish from Kevin O’Hara that completely altered the feeling from that match.

“Every game is as important as the other but what a finish from Kevin. He comes on, in a difficult game, in terrible conditions, but we stuck to it. We’ve got a belief in this team that we’ve seen. We’ve gone goals down in the season but we’ve come back to get something from games.

“We’ve come from behind to win games or we’ve had to come back to get something from a game. Saturday goes to show we never take our foot off the gas or our eye off the target and that’s what Kevin did on Saturday. He comes on and he produces a fantastic striker’s finish, to be in the box, between the sticks, to put that one in.”

Up until that late winner it did look as though the match was going to fizzle out in a goalless draw but the Pars showed that they have the drive to fight to the bitter end. That comes from both the players and the manager Owain felt that he was a vital part in it all:-

“I think it’s a bit of everything and if you do have it in your team then it’s a real weapon to have. To have a belief is something you can give someone but certainly we have that in this squad.

“When you’re defending, you defend from the front and when you’re attacking, you attack from the back. Your first line of defence is your striker or flip it the other way, you’re first point of attack is your goalie or the players at the back.

“It’s not about one guy or a couple of guys, it’s about a whole squad. And it’s not about just the players on the team-sheet on any given day because a season’s a long, long time. So, credit to absolutely everyone at this football club for that attitude.”

Saturday’s result against Arbroath meant that Dunfermline retained second place in the Championship and Owain felt that was as good as could have been wished for at the start of the season:-

“We knew it was going to be tough and it’s going to be tough throughout the course of the season. But if someone had said we would be on 18 points at Christmas we would have snapped anyone’s hand off for that.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic start to the season and we’re on course for the plan of what we had in mind. It’s very important now that we don’t take our eye off that target and we continue.”
