Iain Wilson scores but no party

Wednesday, 16th Dec 2020

“When I am asked to get further forward then hopefully I chip in with a few.”

The Dunfermline Athletic summer signing from Kilmarnock Iain Wilson celebrated his first goal for the club on his 22nd birthday. Having sat out the first hour and 45 minutes of the Betfred Cup quarter final against St Johnstone time was running out to truly celebrate on his birthday. Iain commented:-

“It was good to get on and get the goal, it was just unfortunate that we lost in the shoot out. Penalties are a lottery they can go either way.

“I think it was credit to us the way we dug in for the first twenty minutes when they were definitely the better team. When you stay in the game you always have a chance. We grew into it, I thought we did that well towards the end of the first half and there on.”

Iain was the fourth substitute used by Stevie Crawford in the match as he was introduced at half time in extra time.

“Fraser Murray got injured, unfortunate for him but fortunate for me because I was beginning to get a bit frustrated sitting on the bench. I got the opportunity to go on and show what I could do.”

His side desperately needed a goal and were just going for it when Iain struck the equaliser seven minutes from the end of extra time that subsequently took the tie to a penalty shoot out.

“Ryan Dow was holding it off. I think someone might have handled it and it might have been a penalty. Fortunately it just fell for me and I swung my leg at it. It was good to get the goal, it was a good birthday present for me.”

It was Iain’s first goal since scoring against Dunfermline while on loan at Palmerston Park two seasons ago. Stevie Crawford has said that he thinks that goals can be added to Iain’s game and he agreed:-

“I need to get up the pitch a wee bit more and get into positions but at times I am playing as a sitter that makes it a little more difficult. When I am asked to get further forward then hopefully I chip in with a few.”

Iain was the second Dunfermline player to step up in the shoot out to take a penalty and at 1-0 due to Zander Clark saving from Paul Watson the pressure was on him to score again. He described what happened:-

“I was just about to hit it. I was waiting on him to dive and he dived at the last second as I was about to go that way.

“Kevin (O’Hara) has scored four penalties to win us games so there are no complaints there. It is disappointing but there have been a few games in the league although we have been playing well there have been times when we have got the rub of the green. The last couple of weeks we have been unlucky but maybe that has made up for being more lucky ourselves in a couple of weeks.

“That is two defeats in a row and went want to rectify that on Saturday but it will be a hard game. The teams round about us have been closing the gap and they are all good teams.”

So far Iain has started six and been sub in five of the thirteen Dunfermline games this season. That has given him 565 minutes of game time and was an unused sub in the league games against Hearts and Morton but he sees the strength of the squad as a positive:-

“It is only good for everybody, to push everybody else on. It has been working this season so far. I don’t think that we have started the same team two weeks in a row often. Maybe twice so it shows that we have good competition for places.”

“Being in and out the team has been a little frustrating but we have a good squad and good players in my position. I just have to do what I can whenever I get the opportunity.”
