Aaron Comrie up against old pals

“As long as Saturday’s result is a blip and we can go and recharge and go after St Johnstone

Tuesday night’s Betfred Cup quarter final against St Johnstone is going to be a real test for Stevie Crawford’s team. It affords chance to weigh themselves up against a Premiership club and an opportunity to progress into the semi final of a National cup competition that brings with it the glamour of a trip to the National Stadium.

Aaron Comrie played in last season’s Betfred Cup tie at Celtic Park in which Dunfermline took the cup holders to extra time. The 23 year old full back welcomes Tuesday night’s match claiming that everyone wants to play at the highest level:-

“We’ve got a got a young squad here and for some of the younger boys, they’ll have not had the chance to play against Premiership opposition. Others may have so it’s a good one for everyone involved.

“It will be a tough test but as long as we don’t go into our shells we can do well because we’ve got good players. It’s all good talking, you need to show it on the pitch and it’s a good opportunity for everyone.

“Although it’s a good chance for the boys and the club to progress in the cup, St Johnstone have been flying so we are fully aware how tough it will be but it’s one we’ll be really looking forward to.”

Four years after moving from the Celtic youth academy to St Johnstone, Aaron joined Dunfermline Athletic from St Johnstone in May 2019. Naturally he knows a fair deal about the Perth club and their players:-

“I’ve still got a few friends there so I do keep an eye out for them and their results. They’ve done well under Callum Davidson and we’re under no illusions about how hard it’s going to be.

“It will be the first time I’ve come up against them and I’m looking forward to it. It didn`t quite work out the way I hoped there but I have only good memories of my time at St Johnstone.

“I keep in regular contact with some of the guys up there, whether it’s through the Playstation or text or whatever. I’ve got good friends there, friends for life. It will be nice to see them all but we’re coming to win the game, and likewise so will they.”

Both sides lost their eleven game unbeaten record on Saturday as the Saints went down 2-1 at home to Livingston and the Pars 2-1 at home to Morton but Aaron insisted that the Betfred Cup tie will be a completely different sort of game:-

“Morton came and sat in but we know we’ll need to be at our best to beat a St Johnstone team that is doing well. As long as Saturday’s result is a blip and we can go and recharge and go after St Johnstone. I’m sure it will be an exciting game.

“Hopefully it will be a good advert, apart from Saturday’s result we’ve been doing well in the league and it will be a good test for us to see where we’re at as a club. It’s one everyone is looking forward to.”

So St Johnstone stand between Dunfermline and a trip to Hampden for the first time since 2009, Aaron ended:-

“That’s the aim, we have a home draw and we will go into the game fancying ourselves, knowing how hard it’s going to be. If we win the game we go to Hampden. It’s one that’s good for the fans, the players and the club as a whole.”
