Wilson expects tough drama from Queens
Friday, 30th Oct 2020Iain Wilson changes rooms as the former Queen of the South midfielder comes up against his old club for the first time.
After two Betfred Cup matches in which he came off the bench Iain Wilson has started Dunfermline’s last three matches and is hoping to line up against his former club on Saturday. The 21 year old midfielder is unlikely to recognise many though because since he lined up for Queen of the South against Dunfermline on 7th March of that team only Stephen Dobbie and Daniel Pybus remain at the Dumfries club.
Iain told the website:- “Other than them I don’t really know anything about them.” The management team is well known to him though as they are to Dunfermline as Allan Johnston and Sandy Clark return to East End Park. Iain felt however that they would treat Dunfermline like any other Championship opponent:-
“They just focus on where they are just now and focus on what is best for Queens and not be trying to get anything over Dunfermline.”
Iain who made four appearances against Dunfermline while on loan at Queen of the South from Kilmarnock, joined Dunfermline in July 2020 on a two year deal. His record against his current team included a goal in Queens 2-1 win at Palmerston in April 2019.
He had made 51 appearances for Killie and another 26 while at Queen of the South in the early parts of both 2019 and 2020 when signed in the summer by Stevie Crawford. The Pars boss said that he thought that Dunfermline could help him become a goal threat. Despite having a good strike on him he has still to open his account, Iain commented on his scoring prospects:-
“Hopefully but I cannot promise you that. We are starting to score a few from open play now. At the start it was Dom and Muz who won those games for us. Hopefully now I can chip in, it depends on the tactics every week. Sometimes I am playing as a sitter and that is alright by me.”
The Irvine born Par provides a strong physical presence in midfield and he was pleased to play his part as the team ran out impressive 4-1 winners over Alloa Athletic:-
“On Saturday we calmed ourselves down and went again in the second half. They were the better team in the first half, they are probably the best passing team in the league for me. It was good to get into it in the second half.
“Alloa were a bit more stuffy under Jim Goodwin, now they are playing more football and they are a hard team to play against.”
Iain has moved from his home in West Kilbride to live next to the stadium and he has enjoyed getting to know his new team mates.
“It has been tough coming back to it but we are getting into it now. I only really knew Stevie Crawford as an opposition team manager but it is good to be on the other side now, I have been enjoying it.”
Dom Thomas had been a team mate at Kilmarnock and he knew Cammy Gill and Kevin O ‘Hara from his youth level Scotland experiences.
“It has been a bit strange just turning up to training then going home. I knew a handful but most of them are new but I settled in alright.
“We have quite a competition for places. There are four or five of us competing for midfield places so if we can keep trying our best individually and it will benefit the team. Kevin (O’Hara) and Kyle (Turner) didn’t start at the weekend.
“It is a good squad so we need to be on our toes but it pushes you on. I think everybody in the squad will be hoping to start, we will just have to wait to find out.”
Five wins from the first five competitive matches should ensure that Dunfermline are full of confidence for the visit of Queen of the South. Iain closed:-
“It has been a good start but we have another tough game at the weekend. Hopefully we can keep the run going. Queens got beat in their last two games so they will be looking to win no matter who they are playing.”
