Matty Todd goes out on loan

Friday, 25th Sep 2020

“For Matty to develop at the rate that we want him to it is important that he goes out and gets games.”

Mark Wilson has added Matthew Todd to his Brechin City squad after a deal was reached for the nineteen year old Pars midfielder to join the Scottish League Two club.

Stevie Crawford has been impressed by the outcome of Paul Allan’s experiences last season at the Angus club and feels that Matty can benefit by going there for this season. Paul made 21 appearances for Brechin and scored his first senior goal at Central Park. Stevie described the difference in his 20 year old:-

“Paul has come in a done really well during pre season and he has more than held his own in the couple of games that we have played already. We have young Scotty Cusick loaned out to Brechin and they were keen to take Matty Todd.

“It will give him the chance to see what league football is like. We have the knock on effect of bringing in boys like Fraser Murray, Kerr McInroy and Lewis Mayo. With all the best intentions you can only field eleven players and it is right to put Matty Todd out on loan to kick on his development.

“We will assess the squad again next week. I have said that in terms of numbers, sometimes you can have too many but it is getting that balance right with being competitive with players knowing that they have an opportunity to play and then being realistic.

“If we feel that the need to try and put players out to get them game time and we can get them with the right clubs then that is something that we will actively do.”

Matty is a local lad who has come through the Fife Elite Academy. He has made 17 first team appearances including against Celtic in last season’s Betfred Cup but he should not be disappointed claimed Stevie, he should be “the absolute opposite.”

“The coaches had a discussion and selfishly we could keep him in and around the place and he probably would have the opportunity to be around the squad but it is weighing up the chance for him to probably get more game time at a lower level. He is not guaranteed it, we want him to go and fight for his place and if he is not doing the business at Brechin, Mark Wilson and Simon Donnelly will be respectful. He is not going there to be guaranteed a start, that is part of his learning and education.

“For Matty to develop at the rate that we want him to it is important that he goes out and gets games.”
