Manager post Willem II

Tuesday, 16th Jan 2001

Jimmy Calderwood gave his thoughts on the 3-2 victory over Willem II in Agadir.

Pars manager Jimmy Calderwood said:-

“The pitch wasn’t very good and the weather was hot and difficult. The system that we played was very attacking; we played 3-3-4 so we were not getting a lot of cover at the back. It was man for man and the players had to win their personal duals. I think that they did and we should have won by a lot more.

“Every game is about winning and good habits. I heard that Willem II were on a bit of a downer today but we are the opposite and it reflects in the training and everything that you do – it is great!

“I think that Willem II came into this game thinking that they were going to win easily because we were beaten 8-2 by Feyenoord. They were saying who is this Dunfermline but as I have said before we are not a bad team. We gave them a surprise and we are going to surprise a few yet.

“I knew how Willem were going to play (4-4-3) and we didn’t give them a chance to play by pushing up right away. With the pace that we have at the back with Skerla, McGroarty and Doesburg allowed Scott Thomson to move into midfield. I thought their attacking midfield player might be a bit difficult for Fergie. We tried a few things and it worked well for us because there will be games that we have to win in the next two months.

“It was good to have John Potter back; it doesn’t matter where you play him he is always positive. Wee McLeish was brilliant. He is a midfield player who wasn’t coming; Mark McGarty got injured last thing on Friday before we left. George Fotheringham couldn’t get a passport and McLeish is here. He came on and played a tremendous role. He proved he has got two good feet the kid. He puts himself up the pecking order – you have got to take your chances in football”

Jimmy also praised Andy Tod – more news on that later in the week.
