Jimmy Millar

Signed by Dunfermline from Edinburgh juveniles, Merchiston Thistle, Jimmy Millar made his debut as an 18 year old inside forward in January 1953 before appearing more regularly at half back the following season.

His natural ability and strength in the air persuaded his manager Bobby Ancell to try him at centre forward at the start of the 1954-1955 season even though Jimmy was only 5’6” tall.

The gamble paid off and his goals propelled the Pars towards promotion but not before Jimmy was sold to Rangers for £5,500 after scoring 22 times in 50 matches.

His Ibrox career developed in a similar way - it wasn’t until 1959 that he was given the opportunity to lead the line and he grabbed it with both hands, netting 162 goals in 317 games on the way to winning three league titles, five Scottish Cups and three League Cups.

In 1967 he moved on to Dundee United where he played 22 times and scoring three goals before taking up the post as manager of Raith Rovers in early 1969. He resigned in September 1970 to concentrate on his pub, the Duke’s Head at the foot of Easter Road, which was rather ironic since Jimmy had grown up a Hearts fan idolising centre forward Willie Bauld.
