Welsh keeper joins Pars
Thursday, 30th Jan 2020Dunfermline Athletic are pleased to announce the signing of Owain Fôn Williams on loan from Hamilton Academical until the end of the season.
Owain Fôn Williams was brought up in the small Welsh village of Penygroes which is located to the south of Caernarfon and north of Porthmadog. The 32 year old goalkeeper began his football experience as a sixteen years old at Manchester United and Liverpool before electing to enter the Crewe Alexandria Youth Academy.
His first professional experience was at Stockport County. After 91 appearances for County he moved to Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers before coming north to join Inverness Caley Thistle and then Hamilton Academical.
Owain is a keeper with a vast amount of experience having also playing for Indy Eleven in the United Soccer League and the Welsh national team.
Stevie Crawford commented on signing Owain Fôn Williams:-
“With all his wealth of experience Owain can only be a good thing for us. Obviously a difficult situation for Cammy Gill and Ryan Scully with another experienced keeper coming in. I am sure with the way they two are that they will get their heads down, get on with it and compete for that number one jersey.
“When we found out that there was an opportunity to bring him in we felt that it was right for us to try and climb this league.
“He is 32 years of age, he has over 400 games experience. Albeit he has one cap for Wales, he has been involved in that international set up for a number of years.
“The brutal reality is that he will be coming here to start games of football. Like anybody if the form is not there then we would be looking at possibly having to change it but I don’t foresee with Owain coming in that being something that we have to worry about at the moment.”
Formerly a Welsh youth international, Owain was first called up to the senior Welsh team in 2009, finally making his debut in 2015. He was a member of the Wales squad that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016.
This season Owain has made 21 appearances for Hamilton including in their last three matches against Edinburgh City, Hibs and Livingston.
The 32 year old will be the most senior member of Stevie Crawford’s squad.
