Rare goal but Martin still disappointed

Monday, 16th Dec 2019

“This is another blip so hopefully we can get a run of form after this. We are still where we want to be but it is a disappointing result.”

Twenty three year old Lewis Martin has been one of only two Pars players to have been ever present this season and that is in stark contrast to his one start in an injury blighted last season in the final match of the campaign against Inverness Caley Thistle.

Rarely in his 155 Dunfermline appearances has Lewis experienced such a first half reversal and he felt that Saturday’s first half score line at Dundee could not have been predicted given the good form shown in recent weeks by the Fifers:-

“That wasn’t like us, in the last few weeks we have been really strong defensively and going forward. Saturday we were not good enough defensively, three soft goals put ourselves under pressure and gave us a mountain to climb. When they got their fourth that made in even bigger.

“At 3-1 down at half time we came out looking not to concede straight away and we did. We were disappointed with that and then we had a man sent off but with the group of boys we have got we are always going to stick in, work together and nearly got it back in the end.”

Dunfermline had travelled to Dens Park hoping to take an early lead and get the home fans on the backs of their players. When Dundee went 4-1 up that seemed unlikely but then losing two goals to a team with just ten men definitely created disquiet from the Dundee fans. Lewis observed:-

“When we scored the equaliser at 1-1 you could sense it. It is the same everywhere - if you are not doing well and you concede a goal while you are under a bit of pressure, fans are going to get on at you. We could sense it but defensively we weren’t good enough and gave away soft goals.

“Greg Kiltie was unlucky to get sent off but we are a good group of boys who are always going to dig in, fight for each other and I think we showed that.”

The third Pars goal was scored by Lewis, his second in two weeks and as many as he has scored in the previous six league seasons at the club. It set up a frantic finish to the match but Dundee hung on to take the three points. The former Scotland under 19 cap described his 72nd strike, stressing the importance of still being in a play off position:-

“The ball just came across from the right, nobody matched me really so I took a touch and just hit it. Luckily enough it went in.

“It was hard for us but we will kick on next week. We have to put another run together. We got beat off Alloa, got beat off Stranraer and then went on a run. This is another blip so hopefully we can get a run of form after this. We are still where we want to be but it is a disappointing result.”
