Back where we belong claims Killie boy

Wednesday, 4th Dec 2019

Josh Edwards - “ Being from Kilmarnock it is good to come down here and always beat them. I enjoyed it.”

Still recovering from the strenuous warm down at Somerset Park on Tuesday night Josh Edwards responded “it is where we belong” when asked how he felt about climbing to fourth in the Championship.

“It was good going back into the dressing room, all the boys were buzzing so I am looking forward to Saturday now. We have chance back at home to try and make it five wins on the bounce there and put some pressure on Inverness.”

As a fourteen year old Josh spent six months in the Ayr United youth system but it was his roots that gave him the greatest personal pleasure with the result:-

“Being from Kilmarnock it is good to come down here and always beat them. I enjoyed it.”

Josh started the game on the subs bench but was brought on for captain Lee Ashcroft before the start of the second half. The nineteen year old signed from Airdrieonians in July explained:-

“Ashy had a bit of a problem with a cut just above his eye. He wasn’t feeling one hundred percent to carry on in the second half so the gaffer called me off the bench. I was just glad to get on and contribute to help the boys.”

The first half that Josh followed from the dugout was not the most spellbinding of 45 minutes. He continued:-

“It was a very scrappy game, Ayr hadn’t played in a while and obviously they were just trying to get back up to speed. They had the majority of the first half of the first half I would say but we played our way back into it and kicked on in the second half. We had a good solid overall performance to keep them out in the last ten minutes.”

The only goal of the match was to be scored by the visitors in 68 minutes and Josh played an important part in the build up to it. He explained:-

“I just saw the boy looking to switch the ball and I was just waiting on him to play it because I could see myself cutting it out. I made my move and got on the end of it. I played it to Kiltie who put in a great ball and Nizzy does what he does and puts the ball in the back of the net.”

Ayr United mounted all out attack on the Fifers goal for the rest of the game. Josh described the last twenty minutes as tough, they put a lot of pressure on us. Danny (Devine) made a few huge headers towards the end and we saw it through.”

Josh incurred a clip on his head in the frantic defending as time ran out. Despite the head knock Josh said:-

“I had to get back up because I knew the ball was still behind me, I couldn’t just stay down I had to get up and get going.”

“Cammy Gill pulled off three great saves in the dying minutes and Ayr pushed as they sensed that they had to.

“Cammy had a good game, he pulled off a few big saves when we needed it. Just after we scored one of their boys was through past Danny and Lewis and Cammy has made a big save for us to keep us in the game.

“We have helped him out in front of him as well but when he was called upon he provided for us and helped us get the three points.”
