Just not good enough says Ryan Dow

Monday, 28th Oct 2019

“We just need to be more solid as a team, cut out individual mistakes and hopefully push on.”

Basic mistakes are costing Dunfermline Athletic vital league points claims Ryan Dow. Speaking after the 2-0 defeat away to Dundee United, the Pars midfielder said that he didn’t want to relate another hard luck story but that has been the story of the season as far as he is concerned:-

“We have given away points. We never scored so it is not a hard luck story like that. We keep making basic mistakes and getting punished for it, especially when we are on top. United couldn’t get out, it felt like the first five or ten minutes that we kept them in their box, winning corners and free kicks.

“They went up the field and it was just a basic error, they cross it again and in the second phase Shankland taps it in. Then they got a twenty minute lift, it is just not good enough from our point of view.

“We did have chances, even in the second half we hit the bar, I had a chance one on one where the keeper comes out and he does well. It is just one of those stories, if we could have got one of them but it never happened.”

Ryan who was a Dundee United player from joining as a fourteen year old youth through to the age of 25, feels errors must be cut out and if they did then Dunfermline would be right up there at the top of the league table.

“It is that tight. We came here and we need to move on. We have had a good wee four games unbeaten run. There were two draws in the middle but again when you look at it, a last minute goal against Morton and it was another three points dropped. We need to stop doing that.”

Ten matches into the Championship campaign have yielded the Pars just ten points but Ryan revealed that the squad feel that if they can cut out these mistakes they are capable of winning a lot more games.

“When you watch the live games and after playing all the teams and I don’t think that there is anything in the league from top to bottom. You have to score when you are on top and keep it tight.

“Anyone can beat anyone on their day, I think that has shown throughout the start of the season there have been different sorts of results all over the place. That is how the table is so tight.”

Ryan takes confidence from the creativity that the team is capable of:-

“We have good attacking players who will always create chance. Obviously we never scored at Tannadice but we probably should have from the few chances that we had.

“Obviously last week we scored three goals but we are creating chances, we just need to be more solid as a team, cut out individual mistakes and hopefully push on.”

A chance to get back on track comes around fast with the visit of Dick Campbell’s Arbroath on Tuesday night. Ryan commented:-

“I was out injured the last time we played them but they have had a great win at Partick Thistle on Saturday. I’m sure that they will come into the game with a good bit of confidence but we are at home and after our first home win of the season last week, we are looking to kick on, make East End a bit of a fortress and pick up a lot more points at home.”
