Thomson is Special Reserve
Tuesday, 22nd Oct 2019Joe Thomson nears the end of the long road back in his recovery
The Reserve Cup tie against Celtic saw the return of the Pars 22 year old midfielder Joe Thomson. Out since March this year after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a match against Ayr United, Joe told this website:-
“It was brilliant to get back out there, just disappointed with the result. I know that it is only a reserve game but it is never nice to get beat.
“It was good to get 45 minutes under my belt, I felt as if I could have played longer but probably the physios with their sensible heads on made the correct decision considering how long it has been.
“I feel brilliant, no reaction at all. I am surprised, even the rest of my body felt really good. At half time I was desperate to stay on but it was probably the right decision to come off.”
Joe’s first match back, fittingly against his former club, comes after resuming full training two weeks ago and the final go ahead from a specialist on Monday. Having progressed ahead of expected, undoubtedly due to the hard work done in the gym with physios John Porteous and Kevin Bain and then latterly with the club’s sports scientist, Gary McColl, Joe explained his comeback programme:-
“I think I will play a bit more in my next game and then probably a full game after that. We will wait and see but I felt fit, I felt good.
“It has been a long time, good to get back on the pitch again and hopefully it won’t be too long until it’s a first team game and I am back out there.
“It will take another week or two. I will possibly play against Dundee United Reserves in the next game in a fortnight’s time but I think they are maybe pencilling in a game against junior team for me next week. That would be good and save having to wait an extra week before getting more game time.
“Even just to have the fire in my belly this morning and the feeling of coming to a game. I have missed that a lot, it might only have been a reserve game to some people but I have enjoyed it.”
His manager Stevie Crawford is delighted for Joe, he added:-
“It is a big step for Joe just to get on the grass and get through that 45 minutes. It will be good for his mindset, great for the medical staff.
“Joe being Joe will tell you that he is fit to go and play in the next first team game. In terms of getting to the levels we are hoping of him, he is still a wee bit away yet.”
