Dunfermline Athletic

Kenny Thomson

The reliable Kenny Thomson made his Dunfermline debut as a midfielder in a 4-1 defeat at Ayr United on 29th August 1970 but he didn`t establish himself in the first team until 1972/73 when the Pars won promotion from the Second Division.

While he also played at full back, it was in the centre of defence that Kenny excelled, using his electrifying pace to act almost as a sweeper. Together with his ability to read a game, he often made things look easier than they were and consequently was under rated by many.

Kenny was surprisingly released by Pat Stanton in 1982 after making 423 appearances for Dunfermline, a total only surpassed by Norrie McCathie. He went on to prove Stanton wrong by continuing to play for another ten years. The first five of these at Alloa with whom he played more than 200 times, winning promotion ahead of Dunfermline in 1985.

Kenny then joined St Johnstone in 1987, rising from Second Division to Premier League in the space of three seasons under the management of the former Pars duo Alex Totten and Bert Paton.

Released in 1990, Kenny enjoyed a final fling with Cowdenbeath for whom he played his last match at the age of 40 in February 1992.

Between 15th September 1976 and 26th August 1981 Kenny never missed a competitive match for Dunfermline, an extraordinary run of 227 consecutive games.

His grandfather, Jimmy Thomson was left back in the Pars team that won the Scottish Qualifying Cup in 1911/12.
