Dunfermline Athletic

Derek Ferguson

A composed and cultured midfielder, Derek Ferguson never fulfilled the potential he displayed during his early days with Rangers. Injuries and a strained relationship with manage4 Graeme Souness hindered his progress and in 1990 he decided to move on to Hearts, who paid a club record fee of £750,000.

After rediscovering some of his best form at Tynecastle he joined Second Division, Sunderland who were managed by his former Ibrox captain, Terry Butcher. However, Butcher was sacked shortly after and Sunderland continued to struggle, narrowly escaping relegation.

Falkirk paid £250,000 to bring him home but a decreasing number of appearances in each of his three seasons led to him being released. After proving his fitness he signed a year long contract for 1998/99 season with Dunfermline and made his debut in a 5-0 thrashing by Celtic on the opening day of the season.

Despite the occasional touch of class he often seemed out of place in the hurly-burly relegation battle and made just 23 appearances for the Pars.

Over the next few years Derek played for several clubs and had a spell as manager of Clydebank in 2001/02. The following season he played for Alloa Athletic who ended up relegated out of the Firs5 Division on goal difference.

In 1998/99 was the only season in which he played against his younger brother Barry. The Pars 1-1 draw against Rangers in December his last match at Ibrox.
