Betfred Cup: Saturday 20th July 2019 3.00pm kick off at Ainslie Park.

The Betfred Cup match against Edinburgh City is just the second to be played on official business between the clubs since 8th April 1939 when Dunfermline won 2-1 in a Second Division match.

The clubs played a total of ten matches in the Second Division during the 1930s. Dunfermline won eight, one was drawn and City won 4-1 in what was the very last game of the 1931-32 league season.

Edinburgh City were managed by former Hibs centre half, Gordon Rae and had made the Third Round of the Scottish Cup by defeating East Stirling in a replay. City’s Assistant Manager was Gordon Wilson who had a couple of of first team outings for the Pars in their promotion winning season of 1985-86.

Pars Manager Bert Paton warned his team, who sat seventh in the Premier League at the time, not to underestimate his opponents who sat top of the East of Scotland League and by the looks of the score line that turned out to be the case.

Last season was their best so far, leading the division for twenty of the 46 fixtures. They somehow managed to end up third after a late collapse.

Former Pars youth player Blair Henderson was the main player last season for the Citizens, notching an extremely impressive 40 goals in all competitions including 30 in the league.

The club was formed in 1928 as Edinburgh’s equivalent of Queens Park - an amateur club taking part in senior first class football.

Edinburgh City gained entry to the Scottish League in 1931 - one of five clubs from the capital. They remained in the league until 1949 when they moved into junior football for six years.

The club was reformed in 1986 when the directors of Edinburgh City Football Club gave permission for Edinburgh based Postal United to use the name in the East of Scotland League.

In 1995 the City of Edinburgh Council granted Edinburgh City permission to hire Meadowbank Stadium for home gamed with effect from January 1996. The use of an enclosed venue allowed the club to apply for SFA membership which was granted in June 1996.

Edinburgh City returned to the Scottish League in 2016 to make their second league debut.

Edinburgh City manager is James McDonaugh. The Ainslie Park gaffer came into football without a history in the profession. Having gained all of his coaching certificates right up to the UEFA pro licence, McDonaugh started his career at Hibs in their highly successful youth academy.

From there McDonaugh progressed to Falkirk assistant manager to Peter Houston and in 2017 took over at Edinburgh City.
