Manager Stevie Crawford told his players that collectively the performance against Ayr was just not good enough.
“The first half wasn’t good enough, that is the worst it has been since I have taken over. Collectively we allowed Ayr United to dominate the first half at East End Park which is not a nice feeling.
“We decided at half time to put Higgs upfront with Bruce to try and stop them getting out the back as easy. It changed the game a little from it, we brought Faiss on and then we started turning them. But it was a little bit of the too little too late scenario where we probably didn’t deserve the rub of the green from the chances. We created five or six really good chances towards the end of the game.
“Together we got a lot of plaudits from our run of (five winning) games because of our togetherness but tonight together we were not good enough in the first half.”
At the start of the week Stevie had said how big a week it was for the club facing both Dundee and Ayr Uniteds, it turned out that no points could be taken from the two home games:-
“We didn’t fear that going into the game, Dundee United had to come down here and work hard to beat us during the week. Ayr United have come up and done their job on us first half and as I say it is disappointing collectively. I must stressed that collectively, collectively that wasn’t good enough.”
Joe Thomson incurred an injury just before the interval and left the ground on crutches, how was he?
“I am not actually sure. The fact that he had to be stretchered off but I honestly don’t know enough to comment on the injury.”
At the final whistle there appeared to be a bit of a bust up that Stevie put down to emotions running high.
“There was a lot at stake in the game. For Ayr United it was obviously a massive result for them. Our boys were desperate to try and get the equaliser, I never actually saw if there was any pushing and pulling but it was just emotion of the game I think.”
