The Hall of Fame is Back!
Thursday, 21st Mar 2019The DAFC Hall of Fame, which was started in order to recognise some of the football club’s greatest servants and heroes, is making a comeback in April.
The first Dunfermline Athletic Hall of Fame event was staged at the Glen Pavilion in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline on 27th November 2004. The event ran on nine occasions, the last taking place in November 2012, by which time forty-nine Hall of Fame awards had been made.
Membership of the Hall of Fame was bestowed on a wide range of people, including a number of the Pars’ greatest ever player – Andy Wilson, Ron Mailer, Roy Barry Charlie Dickson, Alex Edwards, Sir Alex Ferguson and Norrie McCathie to name but a few.
Past managers were also there – Jock Stein, Willie Cunningham, George Farm and Bert Paton. There were also a number of awards in the category of ‘Services to Football’ and among the recipients were Jimmy McConville (former secretary), Joe Nelson (trainer and kit man), and Andy Stevenson (physiotherapist).
The event was discontinued temporarily following the club entering administration in 2013, but with the passage of time and the number of requests to revive it, the club has decided to restart the event. And the good news is that it will no longer be a black tie event but one which ordinary fans can enjoy as it is being incorporated into the Centenary Club Lifeline Player of the Year event taking place at the Glen Pavilion, Dunfermline on Saturday 27 April.
Club Vice-Chairman Billy Braisby said:
“We’ve had a number of requests to bring the Hall of Fame back and we now think the time is right. It is an important event for us because it allows the club to recognise players and others that have made the club successful. We’re going to start in a small way and we are working with the likes of the Former Players Association to develop it. It is now planned that this will be an event within an event at the Centenary Club Lifeline Player of the Year, which allows a lot more fans to be part of it.”
