Welcome winner for Thomson

Monday, 18th Feb 2019

“I am somebody who looks to get my name on the scoresheet so I was getting a bit frustrated

Joe Thomson’s winner for Dunfermline on Saturday in his 26th appearance was just his second goal of the season. Naturally Joe wants to better his five goal tally at Queen of the South last season. The midfielder who joined from Celtic at the start of this season told the media:-

“I have not scored enough. I am somebody who looks to get my name on the scoresheet so I was getting a bit frustrated and it is good to get a goal on Saturday.

“It was a good result and I think other results went for us as well. It is starting to get us back to where we want to be. I think it was a really deserved three points.

“I have said before that we don’t seem to be getting the breaks, today we obviously got a break with the goal and I couldn’t be happier because all the lads worked their hardest.”

Joe’s goal just two minutes into the second half against Inverness Caley Thistle was a great relief that fans, management and players. It took everyone including Mark Ridgers the opposition keeper by surprise. Joe speculated:-

“I think there was a bit of movement on it, I think the keeper maybe thought it was going further into the corner than it was and it jus came back in. There wasn’t a deflection on it.

“We have played well since he came in. There have been games where we have deserved more but on Saturday it was good to get Stevie and Greg their first three points.”

Reminded that those three points take the Pars five points away from bottom spot but also five points off Inverness in fourth, Joe continued:-

“From the start of the season we have been aiming for a play off place but if we put in performances like that we will not be far away.”

With a team sheet that had everyone puzzling over how the team would shape up, it was clear that the fortnight gap between the Ross County match and Inverness Caley Thistle has afforded the management tome to work on things

“There was maybe a different shape to us. I don’t think we have played that shape before. I felt as if we were a lot better defensively and if you defend like that you are always going to get chances. It only takes one goal as it showed on Saturday.

“It was a great team performance from goalkeeper Ryan right through to Bruce upfront. Stevie has brought in a couple of players who played against Inverness. I thought they did really well, settled in really quickly. I think we needed that wee boost.

“Everyone is working hard because there is a lot of competition for places so everybody is kept on their toes.”
