Manager on Thursday

Thursday, 29th Nov 2018

29/11/18: AJ - “We lost two goals from corners at the weekend so we are going to have to defend well”

Allan Johnston is determined that his side’s form has to improve.

“The results have not been good enough and we know that we need to quickly pick up. When you look at the fixtures coming up they are all against teams round about us for the next month. So it important that we start it off by getting a win, especially at home.

“We need to start improving our home form because it has been cause for concern this season with the results.”

The manager was reminded that the last home win was against Partick Thistle in September and he responded:-

“We know that we have to be a threat, we have to score goals. They had a midweek game against Peterhead so we have to make sure that we start the game really fast. We need to get the tempo of the game up and make sure that we have legs in the team, people who can run and hopefully go and create chances, score some goals and get that win that we are looking for.”

Kallum Higginbotham will sit the match out after being shown a red card at the Global Energy Stadium last weekend. The manager commented:-

“He knows himself that he let himself down and obviously his team mates. I’m sure that he will learn from it. He has behaved himself for the majority of games but we cannot afford people getting sent off. It puts you right under pressure.

“An away game against Ross County doesn’t get much harder never mind down to ten men. Having said that I thought the boys battled away really well and with a wee bit of luck we could probably have got something from the game.

“Maybe a couple of decisions from the referee as well. Giving offside when Faiss was right through and then being that bit more clinical. They went up the park and scored.

“Ross County gambled a little bit to get an extra man, they left one person back but we should have been closer. We should stop the shot and when the ball comes into the box you have to defend it well by being loser to people.
There are wee bits that we need to improve on because these wee bits are coding us dear.

“A big threat for Morton will be setpieces. We lost two goals from corners at the weekend so we are going to have to defend well. I was at their game against Peterhead and they have five big players who attack the ball which is very unusual. We will have to make sure that we defend well.”

The manager gave a run down on injuries and availability.
Aidan Connolly, Andy Ryan, Louis Longridge are all out. Louis has had an operation so is on the road back.
Mark Durnan joined in training today, hopefully we can get him some game time next week in the reserves. Tom Beadling has been training this week. On loan to Arbroath, Callum Smith is coming back from a wrist injury.

“It is one of those periods where we get one back another one breaks down. I done know why we have had so many injuries. We never usually have many injuries, it’s a wee bit strange in a young squad. You would think that with a younger squad but sometimes that happens.”
