The Pars Remember
Tuesday, 2nd Oct 2018Over £6,000 for two Scottish charities
Initiatives surrounding the laying of the David Hunter VC Memorial paving slab outside East End Park on Sunday 16 September have raised over £6,000 for two Scottish charities. The monies will be shared between PoppyScotland and Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust.
Firstly, there was a memorial lunch held at East End Park immediately after the unveiling of the stone and the related information board. Secondly, match worn poppy red shirts bearing the legend `The Seven Heroes of Moeuvres, September 1918` have been auctioned to Dunfermline Athletic supporters. In addition, shirts have been presented to the regimental museum, and the Mayor of Moeuvres (who drove from France especially for the event).
It is a hundred years since David Hunter commanded a seven man section from the Highland Light Infantry who refused to surrender despite being surrounded and cut-off for two days. Not only that, but they fought back ferociously in defence of their position which was a simple shell-hole.
Hunter, a life-long supporter of Dunfermline Athletic, was awarded the Victoria Cross and his men Distinguished Conduct Medals for their bravery. Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust is proud to have worked with the Hunter family to ensure that the courage of these men is not forgotten.
