Manager Allan Johnston felt that his team can not afford to defend the way they are at the moment:-
“Mistakes are costing us. When you look at the three goals, they are poor goals again. We are giving teams a massive advantage and end up chasing games at the end and it is really open. It is certainly something we need to look at.
“We are far too open, we need to be more compact as a team. We have to stop making individual errors, that is what is killing us at the moment. Even at the second goal, the second phase of the free kick - it is only basics, you stay with your man until it is cleared. We just followed the ball and it was a free header.
“The third goal was a kick out, it took a bad bounce and he (Oakley) just ran through and scored. You cannot afford to lose goals in the manner in which we are losing them and expect to win a game. You end up chasing it and you are wide open.”
The manager felt the first half was a bit nervy:-
“We probably had the majority of the chances but Myles had a chance before they scored. At this moment in time we are not taking our chances and we need to take them when they come along.”
Asked about the break from league football next weekend, AJ claimed that gave his side the opportunity to re-group.
“We obviously need to work on the training ground and back into defending properly because we are shooting ourselvrs in the foot and constantly chasing games. When you lose a goal you must stay in the game, you cannot afford to be wide open and have to try and get the next goal. That is something we need to improve on and obviously we need to take our chances when they come along.”
The manager was encouraged by the impact of his new signing Robbie Muirhead when he came on for his debut early in the first half.
“I thought he came on and did well. He gave us a spark up front. Next week gives us an opportunity to work on a few things, a bit of time to re group before the next league game and hopefully come back and go on a run.”
With Ryan Williamson and Lewis McCann away on international duty next weekend does the Boreham Wood match give the manager a dilemma over selection next weekend?
“It is always one of those games where some boys need game time but we need a result as well. We need to bounce back, we need to get that confidence back, we need to start winnng again so it is important to go there and try and get a good result, a good performance build on that again
To take into the league campaign.”
On the subject of confidence, what was the mood in the changing room?
“Obviously the boys are not happy, they know themselves that they are miles better than that and we cannot afford to make the mistakes that we are making and still win games, especially at this level you get punished.
“The second goal was from a corner, the break away from the corner. Even basic stuff like that, it is not as though teams are working hard to score goals against us.”
