McCann to represent Fatherland
Friday, 31st Aug 2018Lewis McCann’s Northern Ireland call up
Lewis McCann will join the Northern Ireland Under 19s next week for their friendly matches against Slovakia on 5th and 7th September. Lewis qualifies for Stephen Frail’s squad due to his father being born and brought up in Portadown. He was surprised and delighted with the call up, he told this website:-
“Having grown up and spent my whole life in Scotland you don’t really expect that to happen. It is in the back of your mind that it can happen because you qualify, but you don’t expect it. I usually go over every October because I have grandparents there.”
This is the first representative recognition for Lewis and his manager Allan Johnston said:-
“It is good that he has been selected for the Northern Ireland under 19s. Great for him and it just shows you how far he has progressed in a short period of time. You can see the ability that he has got. He is going to be a big player.”
Lewis signed for Dunfermline from Fife Elite in May this year and made his first team debut in July when he came on as a second half sub against Peterhead in the Betfred Cup. He also played the full 90 minutes of the Irn Bru Cup won at Inverness on 14th August.
The manager commended the 17 year old striker’s contribution in Tuesday’s reserve league draw against Motherwell.
“He is one of those boys where nothing fazes him. It doesn’t matter who he is playing against, even against a team like Motherwell who were competitive. He put himself about and had a lot of good touches as well.”
Lewis’ call up will mean that he will miss the club’s Irn Bru Cup adventure to face Boreham Wood.
Ryan Williamson will also miss the Irn Bru Cup trip to Hertfordshire. He has been called up for the Scotland Under 21s who will meet Andorra in the European Championships at Tynecastle on Thursday 6th September and the Netherlands on the following Tuesday in Doetinchem.
Good luck to both young players, Pars fans will be looking out for your results.
