Allan Johnston told the media:-
“You never like getting beat but it is the manner and performance. I thought the boys were different class, they gave everything today against a strong Hearts team. They pushed them all the way and on another day we could quite easily have won with the chances we created.
“We frustrated Hearts for long periods. I don’t think that they created much and I don’t think our keeper had many saves and at the end of the day, their keeper has probably pulled off a couple of saves that keeps them in the cup.”
Dunfermline threw on two substitutes and pressed for an equaliser after losing what turned out to be the winning goal in 79 minutes.
“We went for it in the end. The score probably flattered Hearts. Up to the point of the goal they never really created anything. I don’t think Lee (Robinson) had many saves. We looked the much better team in terms of passing it, the movement and chances created. So it is disappointing when you come away empty handed.”
The manager was pleased that within his team there were a lot of good performances against the team that currently leads the Scottish Premiership:-
“There were a lot of good performances, even down to James Craigen who just asked to man mark Steven Naismith today. I think he took him out of the game. For a player of his quality it just shows you how big a player he is for Hearts when he is not getting on the ball, they did not create as much.”
Hearts 32 year old Czech goalkeeper, Zdenek Zlamal, extinguished Dunfermline’s hopes by pulling off some wonderful saves towards the end, AJ commented:-
“We just have to make sure that we pick ourselves up. There are a lot of positives to take from the game, there were a lot of good performances. We probably just switched off for their goal. We could maybe have been a wee bit tighter but they got a bit of fortune with it going through a defender’s leg. Sometimes that happens.”
AJ was asked to comment on “possibly the world’s first overlapping goalkeeper”.
“He is a bit eccentric to be fair. It was a great ball to be fair to him so you cannot really criticise him too much. The boys gave everything, they pushed Hearts all the way. As I said you never like getting beat but I cannot complain about any performances especially when you see the reaction of the fans as well. I think they appreciated the effort they put in and the quality that we showed.”
Nice to see East End Park so full?
“It was, it was a brilliant atmosphere and that is where we want to be, back in the Premier League. I think playing against teams like Hearts you can see that we weren’t far away. That is brilliant for the boys and hopefully that will push us on for the remainder of the season.”
