Aidan’s fitness bugged by infection
Friday, 6th Jul 2018“I have played in the Championship before, it is competitive but I don’t think that there is anyone to fear.
Aidan Connolly dropped out of the starting eleven on Wednesday night against Raith Rovers but it was a nasty looking infection on his left leg that caused him to be omitted from the starting eleven. He did, however, make an appearance in the second half when all the younger players were introduced. Speaking exclusively to this website, he explained the problem:-
“I have an infection in my leg and I didn’t train on Tuesday. I was given antibiotics but it doesn’t look like it is getting any better. We weren’t sure what as going to happen.”
The injury was picked up from a slide tackle on the training pitch and it is thought that the infection has possibly been caused by the dry pitch. Disappointed with this bad luck he complimented his replacement:-
“It is only pre season but I need to get game time. I thought big Lewis (McCann), the young boy who came in, did well. Starting is good for him and I am happy for him.”
Aidan was one of ten substitutes that came on for the final half hour:-
“I was playing just off the striker and wherever I play in the team I work hard. In pre season it is all about getting match fitness and getting back to the touches with the ball.
“I thought the young boys did well. They did well in the first game against East Fife, they made a difference. Then against Raith they were really enthusiastic, you need that from young boys. But I’m a young boy as well!”
Capped for Scotland at both under 16 and under 19 level, Aidan signed for Dunfermline after spending the last two seasons at York City but the Dundee born midfielder who is pleased to be back playing in Scotland continued:-
“All the lads have been really nice. I knew a few of them before I came and everyone has welcomed me in. I think all the boys are starting to gel together now. It is going to take time but we are getting to know each other both on and off the pitch.”
Aidan knows Mark Durnan from his Dundee United days and he played alongside both Louis Longridge and at James Craigen when on loan at Raith Rovers for the second half of the 2015-2016 season. He claimed that all helps him settle in but the 22 year old was not one for making big predictions for the campaign ahead:-
“We will take it game by game. The first league game of the season is against my old club Dundee United, we will take it from there but if we have a good start you never know how well we can do.
“I don’t think that there is anyone to fear in the league. A lot of the teams are similar, you get teams who pay higher wages but doesn’t make a difference. It is eleven v eleven at the end of the day.”
